I thought this would do better the 4.664? In most cases I know why my entry did poorly, but in this case I need some help seeing my errors.

I wish I could see the larger version,. but for some reason everytime I click a link my internet explorer locks up. Only on this site though. Hmmm. If I remember correctly though,. I think I gave it a 6 or 7. Great photo, but not overly interesting.

I think the out of focus look you used might not have appealed to alot of voters. I wish the image were sharper in the areas that are in focus, so you could use the shallow DOF without having the whole image look oversoftened. The lighting and coloration work well.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. Definitely agree about the lighting and coloration.

Could be just my monitor but the color seems a little too dark.

If the focus were sharper at the top of the front sandal, it would be great.
Although part of the object, the tab is a bit distracting.

Thanks for the quick feedback!!

I almost submitted a version with a little more depth of field and some USM, but I thought it put to much attention on the bead work and lost some of the shimmer affect from the lighting. Probably one of those situations where I was seeing what I wanted to rather than what a viewer would see.

OOF
Dof could have been greater.
More colour?

You are right! I never noticed that, but the edge of the rear sandal is more in focus than the edge of the front sandal. I should have opened another 1/2 stop and manual focused to move the area of focus forward.

I like your image, especially the shallow DOF, and gave it a 6. Which is not that high a score, I know, and i'm surprised I didn't score it a bit higher, cause I remember thinking it was a cool shot. I really have been rather daunted by voting lately, voting all the images properly takes far too long, and I usually vote twice: a base vote to get it done, then a fine tune vote to really score the image proper. I admit not making to the fine tune vote this time for most of the images. Sorry everyone!

In my opinion a lot of strange scores cropped up in this challenge... there are always a few, but maybe this one had a few more than most. I really thought my image would score above 6, but instead I spent most of the week wondering if would finish above 5.5!

You just can't figure it on this site sometimes!

Your shot for this challenge was great. I'll add a comment on the image itself, but I gave it a seven and it might have slid up on the second pass... but I never got back through everything again.

You're missing the feet! No, wait, that's next week ... sorry.

I try to hardly watch the scores anymore ... too many 6-7-8 shots end up with 4-5 averages ... not even counting mine : )

It's really all about having enough impact to make people take time to write a thoughtful comment, even if critical. I was totally shocked that my everyday entry, while garnering the usual mid-4's vote, got 15 comments, including some really positive ones. A really impactful image might have almost a reverse bell curve for a score ...

You can read more about my entry here.

I'm sure one of our stat guys can figure out what one standard deviation for this challenge was ... my guess is there's a lot of photos clustered fairly closely in the middle of the scoring ranks; with the population "sampling error" figured in (like in polls) it wouldn't surprise me if we had 100 photos essentially tied in the middle.

Continuing your idea GeneralE...

I am really sad that this picture got so low rate...What is wrong in the picture? It tells many things... not only humor.

I am really depress, many other (not counting mine) good pictures got so few points: I am thinking to retire from DPC or be member and only participate in member challenges...

I guess that is the only filter we can apply... usually members have a better knowledge of photos and voting...
What do You think ?

Humor rarely does well here, although it can. People like pictures of pretty things ... and any photo which takes longer than five seconds to make an impact is probably destined for the lower half of the score chart.

One way around your frustration is to discuss the images like this ... you'll quickly find that there's a number of people who agree with you and that reinforcement/validation can be important ... that's why sometimes just one comment on a photo from someone who really "gets it" or appreciates it or is otherwise moved by it makes all the 3 and 4 votes and other BS worthwhile.

Yes, that's true: comments is the most important, the problem is to identify good comments... the good thing is that You get MANY comments, something that do not happen in sites like photonet
