I'm slowly trying to pull together a portfolio of sports shots that I've taken. If anyone has time I'd love to get some feedback on them

I like the following:

I have browsed through your selections of best photographs and they are breathtaking. In most of the sports images, I don't see same level of quality and experience. I liked 2 or 3 more from the sports selection, but I would not recommend them for a Portfolio. Even the ones I have picked I would suggest that you try and replace. I somehow don't feel that the images do justice to your talents.

One big tip for ya, use a faster shutter speed.

J/K of course, although if that was in a challenge you would most certainly get that anyway.

I really like CRW_3938.jpg, flicking through papers and magazines you tend to get bored of the same 'classic' shots of sports action, they generally fall into 3 or so category's and you never see anything different.

Take golf for example. The pictures are either, top of backswing, just after impact, or the end of the follow through.

So that image, to me, is quite refreshing.

I think with things like: CRW_8468.jpg you have to be more choosy with the background, or use a shallow dof to blur it.

IMG_1382.jpg is great. I really like the way the one girl is smiling, she kind of draws in my attention. So would crop out the woman looking at you on the right. Love the warm colors on the skin. Guessing it was taken later in the day.

I like IMG_2521.jpg and I like the way you haven't just stood straight as most people do and take the shoot at 6ft. I would like to really get down flat on the floor and try some shots ;) I like getting on the floor for some reason.

Like the BG a lot and the motion blur: IMG_2584.jpg

Now this: IMG_2551.jpg I really like the coloring. Is this out of camera or have you tweaked it at all. This is right up my street as far as taste goes. Kind of subdued slightly with a 70ish summer vibe to it.

IMG_3982.jpg ;) lol

To be negative IMG_7324.jpg and IMG_8634.jpg are pretty snappy.

Just gone through every one and left a comment on PBase. All in all, top work. I looked through before commenting and I didn't find one I didn't like. The comments are terse not because they're not good shots, just because I thought you'd get most benefit if I went through all of them. I'm sure you know there are lots of good aspects - no point me saying "nice DOF".

Thanks for all the feedback - particularly to Paul for going through all of the shots! Your cropping comments are all well taken - in fact several of these had already gone through one round of cropping. Many are full frame, but I think the ones you commented on wanting a tighter crop were already cropped. There was one you suggested using a wider angle, which was shot with a 17mm - I guess I'll need to fork out for a 1DMkII :)

The various shots you mentioned soft focus on I'm inclined to agree too - I've had a lot of challenges getting good crisp action shots with the D60. Most of the sharper images are manually focused. Some of my 'earlier' sports shots got some of the harder critisism - at least it to me shows that I'm improving (they aren't in chronological order in that folder though)

I think it is something that I have a long way to go - it is definately one of the more challenging areas of shooting.

Jon - thanks also for your comments - on golf - a lot of that is restrictions enforced by the governing body.

The shot with the smiling woman was shot at about 6am, hence the nice light.

Getting down low to shoot the cyclists was one of the more adrenaline pumping locations I've shot from - those guys were travelling at about 25mph + Some of the shots that are WA (like the guy sticking his tongue out) were actually at a distance of about 2 feet at that speed - makes the heart beat a touch faster! The colouring was due to a polariser and slight overexposure.

The ones you highlighted as 'snappy' are probably some of the earliest sports shots I took - so I can happily claim that they are 'old stuff' :)

It is definately something I want to improve at and I really find it challenging - as such these are the best sports shots I've taken in the last 3 years and are a begining 'portfolio'.

There was one you mentioned, where the ref's white stripes were a little bit on the blue side. I find this is a common problem shooting in mixed light situations - I don't think there is any good solution - I can colour correct for the shade, so his whites look okay, but the sunlit whites will look _really_ yellow, or I can correct for those and the shaded whites will look blue. Multiple light sources, different white balances within the one scene. I guess I could photoshop it and mask it to do two colour corrections in one scene.

Perhaps a good candidate for B&W !
