Is anyone using an extender (1.4 or 2.0) with a Canon EF 70-200mm/f4 L? If so, how is the quality? I got confused by another post whether the extender fits the aforementioned lens. I ordered the lens last night with the thought of buying the extender a couple months down the road. My Rebel has been sitting on the shelf since I can't take a decent picture with the kit lens. I checked the Canon webpage and if I read it correctly the lens will fit, but the sentence structure was odd and not real clear.

I had heard the 1.4 was the best extender to go with (you lose a stop however). I am also looking at a 70-200 f4 L so am also eager to learn if this is correct.

I'm just curious, why do you feel you can't get a decent picture with the kit lens? Are you meaning only at times when a telephoto lens would have been better, or do you mean all the time? What has been your experience with the kit lens?

Most of the photos I've taken with the kit lens are soft. Not really soft, but not to the level of sharpness I enjoy with my Olympus. I also take mostly wildlife shots and of course the kit lens wasn't really made for that.

The 1.4x is great in conjunction with the 70-200 F4L. Worth realising though that the 1.4x doesn't work with all of Canon lenses, only some of the L lenses, due to some physical constraints.

The results are excellent on the 70-200 though - crisp, good colour, no real noticeable change at all, other than the max aperture being f5.6

The 2x is supposed to be slightly worse but still good. On an F4 aperture lens, a 2x makes the max aperture f8, and as a result the autofocus will not work (without some hacks)

Thanks Gordon. Your answer made my day! Thought I'd goofed.

dwterry. Here is one of the better pictures I took with the kit lens. Most of the others I've deleted. I had the camera sitting on a guard rail post, so there is no camera shake involved.
