yall think its gonna cost more or less than the 10d?
07/29/2004 01:02:21 AM · #4
It's hard to say. I guess alittle more to fit between the 300D and 1D MkII more evenly.

I don't know, but I hope the 300D kit lens works with it.

There's discussion over on dpreview on this topic, with some "reliable" info.
Do a search... Heck, the info might be over here for all I know. I think it
involved a higher resolution, higher data speeds and a higher cost to go
with all that.

Try the FredMiranda Buy/Sell forum at //www.fredmiranda.com/forum/board/10

Just create a post with a title like
"WTB EF 80-200 f/2.8 L"

If you just want to find out a current price for buying one of these used then try searching that forum for 80-200 and you should find several hits.

For the $100 it cost, it was worth the money. It's a cheap lens, made out of plastic, and probably won't last very long, but the quality is decent for the amount of $$$ spent copared to many other lenses.

Can you name a better lens that covers down to 15mm for the same price? How about for four times it's price? The only lenses that competes with it are in the six hundred dollar range. There are bad builds out there, but to say this lens is junk because it is not as good as the 17-40 L is as silly as saying the Digital Rebel is junk because it isn't as good as the 1D.

Just because its the only one, doesn't mean that it is suddenly good...

It might be the only cheap option.

Well, on the DPReview rumor front I heard that Best Buy already has a sku number in their system that goes live in October titled "Canon EOS 20D Kit w/18-55 EF-S."

Take that rumor for what it's worth of course. But this goes back to the subject of the Kit lense. I agree that it's not "L" glass but c'mon! Can you find something better for $99? Especially if you have a good build. That being said, the 17-40L WILL BE my next lens but I'm satisfied with the kit at the moment.

Absolutely. The EF 50mm f/1.8 is an incredible little piece of glass in a plastic housing. The bokeh on that lens isn't as creamy as the 85mm f/1.8 but its still a better piece of glass than the 18-55. I've shot my 17-40 on the 10D and my friend's 18-55 on the DRebel and while I agree that its a moderate value for the range it gives and the $100 USD cost, I don't have a problem saying that its not a lens you want to keep overlong in your camera bag.

Now, perhaps more to your point, I'm betting you meant to say can you find something at that focal length for a similar price with better MTF values or some other type of measurement.

As for a quality to price comparison, the 50mm f/1.8 at $70 blows away the 18-55 at $99.

Yes, you're right. The moment I saved my message I realized that I didn't specify zoom lens. I have the $70 50mm 1.8 and it will blow the 18-55 away on any day. But it IS a "prime" lense. That same 50mm 1.8 will also probably blow away the 17-40L as well (at some settings).

//www.photo.net/equipment/canon/efs18-55/review/ for a good review of the performance of the 18-55 compared to various other lenses in the price and focal length range.

10D Replacement... rumours of a new Canon 20D are starting to appear on the net.. could this be it?

With regard to wheather the Kit lens will fit... who really cares... I am sure that anyone with a 300D Kit will sell or exchange this to help fund the $1500 for the 20D...

I'd be surprised if Canon shipped the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens with a semi-pro body, especially since the D70 has a much better lens at a fairly low price. Some prosumer point-and-shoots have better lenses. Yes, the kit lens is a great value, but I think anyone who decides the Rebel isn't a good enough body will probably want better glass, too. The release of the Digital Maxxum at Photokina will also up the ante in the DSLR market. If Minolta ships good glass with that body, Canon would look rather silly putting the EF-S lens on a 10-D successor.

Don't forget that the EF-S 18-55mm is a starter lens bundled with an entry-level DSLR. It's purpose is to let the buyer get shooting right away without having to educate themselves about lenses and/or spend more bucks for glass. It helps sell DSLR newbies on the Rebel. As such, it needed to be more flexible than a prime while keeping costs low. I bet most people would say it fills it's intended role fairly well.

Yup! If I ever sell my 300D and upgrade, that 18-55mm will go with it.

You realize that currently that lens only fits the Canon 300D camera. Canon may modify future lens mounts so that they can accept the EF-S lens (of which the 18-55 is the only lens in public existence today). Of course, they didn't make that change to the 1D mark II but perhaps they are saving the -S designation and lens mounts for their non-professional grade camera bodies but that's academic. Unless Canon changes something about their line of camera bodies you won't be able to take that lens with you to your next camera body.

Yup! LOL - sorry, I guess I wasn't specific enough. What I meant was that I haven't used that lens since buying new glass and if I don't unload it on ebay, it'll go with the 300D if I decide to sell it. As in, it was real and it was fun but it wasn't real fun so it's outta here!

For what it's worth, my highest scoring shot...

...was taken with the 18-55 kit lens. If you keep it in the f8-f11 range, I find it's more than sufficient.
