I just puchased the Tamrac Velocity 7 along with a couple lenses. I really like it but I tried putting all my gear in it and doesn't fit! I haven't even used it. I cringe at the thought of a photo backpack and I know that a shoulder bag isn't nearly as a comfortable. My gear includes: Digital Rebel with kit lens, Canon 80-200mm 4.5-5.6, Canon 75-300mm 4-5.6, Canon 50mm 1.8, Sigma 24-135mm 2.8-4.5 with hood, Cokin filter system with 8 filters, a tripod, and I'm planning on buying a flash unit. Based on that, what bag do you recommend?

PS. I also have a laptop that I dont bring with me during local shoots, but I do bring it when I travel for more than a couple of days and a bag that supports it is a plus, but not a must.

I really like the design of my Delsey Pro digital backpack 31. It even has a place for my laptop. I bought it at a camera shop, but you might check it out at www.bogenphoto.com. Why do you cringe at the thought of a photo backpack?

I hate the thought of having to take it off to get anything out of it. Also, I do quite a bit of traveling and I like a bag that I can readily stick my guidebook in while I shoot and then take it right back out. I do that quite often, and it could be time consuming with a backpack. However, I also value my shoulders and I know how heavy a shoulder bag can get so I guess I'll have to compromise.
I think I'm still gonna keep the Velocity 7 just for when I don't need all my gear.

I never carry mine as a backpack. It's got a handle on top. I'm not sure if they are all pretty much the same or not, but mine has three different large zippered compartments in the front. It's real easy to get to my manuals and accessories.

I'm sorry, June, but it's the silly hour here in Mexico...have you considered using a gunny sack secured at the top with baling wire? You could leave it almost anyplace without worrying about theft.

My tamrac expedition 7 holds:

canon 10d with battery grip
canon 70-200 2.8
canon 24-70 2.8
canon 50mm 1.8
sigma 105mm 2.8
sigma 12-24 4.5-5.6
canon 420ex flash
canon 550ex flash
omnibounce for both flashes
remote timer
canon st-e2 remote transmitter
several 77mm filters
kanguru portable hard drive
tripod straps on the back

no problem...
