"Y" is Spanish for "And". It is a word.
Thank you. |

Hope you weren't referring to your own entry... isn't it "illegal" to give away any identifying clues or comments before the challenge ends?
Anyway, I knew that though. :) |

I would have never known that had it not be explained. Since the majority of this site is english (speaking or written) don't you think it would have been better to use a word that the majority would understand since one can only assume that you enter a challenge for the oppertunity to win a ribbon??? |

I think we'd all be better off if we all recognized that not everyone is english speaking, and just because us arrogant north-americans don't speak other languages, some others do. And, some photos (the vast majority, in fact) meet the challenge even if you don't understand it.

I agree. I've been using Babelfish to try and help with the translations.
And, apologies hannafate, I went through the thumbnails, but couldn't find the photo in question. Trying to do too many things at once I think. If you were to PM me, I'd take another look.

This is more interesting, now that the winners are announced...

Aaah, I could see there were words of some sort at the time of voting. I might not have understood what they said BUT it was clear they were some kind of romantic graffiti.
I gave a low score because I thought the photo was dull, poorly composed and dark not because I assumed EYM wasn't a word.
Not trying to be harsh just trying to point out that low scores aren't always because the majority of voters don't get it. That may play a part but...

It wasn't you I was miffed at, Kavey. It was someone who told me "this is just a bunch of letters"
If you look at it, you can see that it says E&M, and lower down, it says R&E. And the knot at the top looks like an eye looking down at the letters.
I thought it was funny and wry.
About half the grafitti around here is in Spanish, naturally enough, since this was part of Mexico not that long ago.
Even though this is an English language site, it is also world-wide, and has entries from all over.
That's why I was miffed by the comment, which evidently came from someone who never considered that the picture may have been taken somewhere besides
English-speaking-town.
I certainly don't mind my photos getting low scores if they are poor photos, but getting a zing because someone can't read Spanish is annoying. |

I understand what the person might have been saying...
Even if it had said E+M or E(heart)M, I still would have looked at it as initials, and not really *words* persay. It's very convenient for spanish graffiti that Y doesn't need to be shortened, as "and" always is, usually to & or + or a heart, but as far as initials go, I'd assume it was just that.
All that aside, I did like your photo, I did know Y = and, and I caught the eye-looking knot. |

So should we all learn spanish before we vote?
I vote based on what I know and how much I like the picture. I suppose I could just assume that in some other language or culture every photo meets the challenge, but then I'd have to assume that "words" means "flowers" in some language. |

louddog, would you have rejected this one because, "This is just a bunch of meaningless marks"? |
