One of the good things about living in Japan is the internet connection, I run a Fiber Optic line at 100mb/s but before you all say WOW it is not as fast as you would think, for example the fastest speed I have actually downloaded from 'microsoft' is 5.6mb/s that is actually 5.6 megabytes every second but most site have bandwidth restriction and so having such a fast line say, ... over 5mb/s is pretty much a waste of time because 99% of websites will not load faster than that. I feel for dail-up users but at the end of the day at least they can still connect. the best thing about running fiber is the networking system i run from home has 4 PC's on it and they can all connect at the same time and there is no drop in speed at all.

I have cable, and I LOVE it!

Are you all talking about advertised speeds or actual speeds? How about running a little test to see how fast your graphics are really downloading? I just tested my download speed at 2.73 mbps, and I'm pretty sure that is better than the speeds I see over the T1 lines at work. If you're interested, click the link below. Once at the site, choose large image, select a free test server near you (closest geographically), and then click run test at the bottom. Afterwards come back here and tell us how fast your downloads are.

For all our benefit, funny thing about internet connection speeds, they are measured in megabits (Mb), Internet Explorer shows speeds in megabytes (MB).
A megabyte is 8 times a megabit. So, a 100 megabit per second (Mb/s) connection is about 12.5 megabytes per second (MB/s).

And mb would technically mean millibits. That's slow!

I had to vote ADSL/Cable, but don't have either; it is the closest to the wireless connection I have.

Well I know it is a joke but its kinda true, my brother in law is on 28.8 unrealiable dial up and simply cannot upload large files if he needs to validate, last time he uploaded from my connection so he could have it validated.
It takes him 1 hour to vote for 13 photos now that is dedication!

Connection Speed Poll?
Funny you should ask! Just went from 40k dial-up to cable 3 days ago, and have gotten to vote two challenges on one week!

Yippee!

I think we have 100Mbit fiber at my work. That's where I usually browse this web so I selected T1... But I only have 512kbit ADSL at home =/

That link did not have my host on it (Comcast), so I used this one instead.

Here are the results:

Download Speed 1537 Kilobits/second
Download Test Size 1204 KBytes
Download Time 6.269 seconds

A few years ago when I was a postgrad I got to test out the superJANET II academic backbone in the UK. Was able to get pretty much the entire bandwidth to myself and was doing downloads from London to Glasgow at 155MBit/s - was quite fast way to get the latest Linux releases...

Can we have an OC-3 option on the poll please ?

Mine is usually a little faster than 28.8 (right now it is 45.3, but is usually in the high 30's). I timed myself one time on one of the challenges and it would take me around 8 hours just to download each picture to vote on. Then, looking at it for a second or two ;-P, clicking my number, waiting for the next one. ugh. Fortunately, I got dpc unblocked at work last week, so now can vote faster.

The most annoying thing for us right now, is that nothing else will work. We don't get cable in our neighborhood. The mountain in the backyard makes satellite impractical, and we are over 18,000 feet from the nearest dsl slick. So, molasses.net it is . . . .for now. :-)

(Could be worse, I guess. I could still have to send messages with smoke signals.)

I, unfortunately, live in an area where the only high speed available costs $99 a month. They have been promising us cable for two years but nothing yet.

I'm usually on at 28.8 and occasionally 31.2. WOOT!

For this reason I seldom vote on a challange unless I have an entry in it. But I do try to comment as often as possible.

Most cable companies will provide you with service like this.

My connection is a 3Mbs download connection, in my house, through Time Warner/ Road Runner. All you have to do is be willing to pay enough.

E.g., from faypek's link to toast.net, my download performance is 3153 Kb/sec
