Interesting going back through my entries - in all cases the vote average from 'non camera using voters' is about 1 point lower than the camera owning vote average. This holds true for all of my entries apart from my most 'postcardy'/simplistic entry that actually one first place.
Do we make it look too easy, so only the people that recognise the value of our work are the people that have tried to do it themselves ? |

No Gordon...this interesting phenomenon has been discussed in other media avenues as well.
There seems to be a malaise of indifference..a "I seen it all" mentality that pervades the general work-a-day public.
If the 1990's was the "I only care about me" era the 2000-2009 era will be the "I don't give a sh1t about anything" era.
It's not until you make a personal investment of yourself..till you care..that you see good things even in the simple stuff. Or that even when you don't like something you care enough to give it a thought at least. |

Just a suggestion, but maybe the only people who should be allowed to vote are the people who actually submit. That way you don't get joe publics m8's and family giving him/her tens just to up his/her score.

Joe Public still has to vote on 20% of the images, and he can't vote the other ones down too far or his votes will be ignored. At that point, he's got just as much right to vote as I do.

But what would I do if I didn't get a submission in and couldn't vote or comment. Maybe I'd go introduce myself to the lady and that kid that live here... |

When they start handing out that $100,000 a week prize money I am all with you brother. Until then who really cares if Joe Blow gets his wife, dog, 3 mistresses, closeted lover, and priest to vote him 10s. |

If that guy has a wife, dog, 3 mistresses, closeted lover and a priest where does he have time to take a picture?

People who take the photos tend to appreciate the technicalities more but the non-photographers might be looking at the picture for what it's worth.
It's the same thing with music. A guitarist might really appreciate what another guitarist is playing because he knows how difficult it is to play, whereas someone who just listens to music might think it's crap because they "just don't like it". Both people could be correct.
I know that the way I view pictures is totally different now than before I was taking photographs. Even when I watch movies I'm looking at where the people are framed, the backgrounds, etc. Actually, sometimes I realize I'm analyzing that stuff and I kick myself for doing it because I just want to enjoy the movie.

I try to impress on people I know who use this site the importance of learning a little bit about the technical aspects of photography, as well as its history.
This gives them the ability to make such mental statements as "Well, the subject matter ain't my cup of tea, but I recognize that this is a quality photo" instead of "I like cats, but I don't like tractors".

Good point, magnetic.
Also, I''m glad to see you are a cat person and not a dog person. But what could possibly be wrong with tractors? ;)

But you know soemthing magnetic? If you go through every single submission here the photographers seem to vote higher 95% the time.
You would think a higher percentage of photos would win over the mass public on cuteness, patriotism ..whatever..but as a group the public votes lower..period.
It''s like Kenny G or N''sync. They got enough of the public to vote them higher than the professionals would ;-)

Maybe the single alpha character is the key. I should change my name to "dpchalleng R". |

So now I have to insert a space or punctuation chracter in my name to improve my scores? |

This is something I almost started a thread about the other day -- but I wanted to point to specific pictures in this week's challenge as positive examples and figured that might skew the voting.
But here's my beef -- advice will come later when I can say look to X, Y, and Z for what I mean. I have NO problem with the pet/baby/child/floral/cute pics -- IF THEY'RE QUALITY. Quality is subjective, I know. All too often, however, the shots of said subjects simply aren't anything but an "oh look how cute" shot that falls into what I see as part of the snapshot genre.
The current challenge has both those shots that I'm amazed by and those that make me want to cry -- and not for joy. If you have to take a picture of your (insert appropriate subject here), by all means, please do -- but I beg of you that you think a little about what you're doing when you shoot. And if you can't get the shot you really want, don't settle -- look for something else.

exactly.
we agree, that knowing more about it seems to boost the score. so what we do is educate the world and make it impossible for kenny g's to thrive.
no offense, kenny ; )

desert rat.
go to the Results page. Scroll all the way down the very bottom. You'll see the breakdown Gordon is referring to. the categories have to do with what people indicated in registering with the site.

Go to your profile page, pick the comments for any of your entries. Scroll down a bit, and you''ll see how your own picture scored based on voters and based on photographers.
In all of my pictures the non-photographers voted me typically at least 1 point lower on average, appart from my most ''commercial'' entry which I would say could easily be a postcard.
It isn''t really an opinion and I''m not trying to draw a conclusion but it is an interesting trend, at least for my results - not sure if it holds true for all entrants.

theres one reason the camera owners votes are higher. it falls under the topics of sympathy and/or empathy. submitters figure that everyone spent as much time on picture taking as they did. they dont want to hurt someone else's feelings |
