Hi, my boss have given me the task of finding a digital camera to take better pictures of our products. We sell jewelry. I just found this site today and it's great, I have learned much about taking jewelry shots and making light domes and such. After finding out about macro mode and white balance control, and seeing that another site that gave a tutorial for taking jewelry pictures used a Olympus C-3040 I found the C-5000 Zoom and was wondering if it would give us good product shots. I like how it has a super macro mode and seems to be able to control the white balance good enough for our needs. Does any one have any opinions on this camera? Do you own one? Any recommendations for a better camera for around the same price $350 that can get better macro shots? That is all we are going to be doing with the camera so I don't really care about other stuff. edit How bout the C-4000? I read on another forum that a lot of people think it's better? Does it take macro shots as good?

Thanks!
Ryan

What are you finding wrong with the pictures that you are currently taking. The key to shooting jewelry is lighting and using a lightbox seems the way to go.

Anyways, my wife has the C-5000Z and is having a lot of fun with it. It takes very nice pictures. The SuperMacro is very effective. I just looked through her stuff and this is the only SuperMacro she has posted:

This is about the size of thimble.

We was in bestbuy one day it was listed at $320 with a 70 dollar rebate so we got it for her. 5MP at 250.00 wasn't bad.

She really likes it and is starting to take some very good pictures with it. My thoughts are the Menuing (through the LCD) are very cumbersome, It is light because of an all plastic housing (feels fragile). The Tripod hole is in the weirdest place, It is off to one side of the camera body (bottom) giving one a really weird feeling when on the tripod (like it is going to fall off). And then there are xD Photo Cards, Still quite expensive. I can get two 512 CF's for one 512 xD card.

If you can get it cheap enough this camera does take really nice pictures and the supermarco does work wonderfully. Might work well in your indoor conditions, except for the tripod weirdness. Honestly if you are looking at getting one, put it on a tripod in the store to see what you think.

I'm guessing that the E1 is out of our price range.

The pictures we have now are taken off of a video capture. They worked well for a while, but now we are moving online, and want to take pictures of our new line with better crisper pictures to make the gems and details really stand out.

I don't really mind the menu system much or the tripod. Once we get the initial setup for the camera to take the best shots, we won't be changing it much, if any.

I guess, I would be willing to here about anyones experience taking very close pictures of anything with cameras in the 250 - 350 price range.

There is a $70 mail-in rebate on the Oly C-5000Z so that is a sweet deal. Don't get me wrong the camera takes execellent shots and SuperMacro is awesome.

I think it would work quite well in your situation.

No, I meant that tutorial, not the E1. In case anyone else wanted to read it. I have the C5050 and I love it.
C5050Zoom
Lots of nice Macros here.

Can someone post some macro pictures using the C5000? Only 18 people use it as their primary camera and there are only two shots posted.

If there are none, let me change the focus on this thread...

What is the best camera for under $500 for taking macro shots?

Thanks
