It`s quite interesting but sometimes very frustrating, how images that have never been submitted to a challenge but are posted to threads (usually as outtakes from a challenge) often become quite popular and receive comments about how well they would have done and how highly people would have scored them.
I wonder how true that really is.
Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing for certain, but I`m sure that viewing an image in a thread without comparing to others as in a challenge situation will always be to that images advantage. I feel sure that if we had an image that had rated no better than average in a challenge but could somehow turn back time and enter it into a thread for evaluation, it would be better appreciated and vice versa.
Sorry, If you are wondering where this is leading, I`m just trying to salve my conscience for submitting the wrong image for the June free study :( |

I agree with you, and I said as much in another thread.
"I've noticed that when people post photos in the forums for independent critique, they often get pats on the back and promises of a high score when the image actually seems rather mediocre. There are a few people here that will come right out and say that it's not a great photo, but they will invariably be slammed if the comment isn't delicately phrased."
Just as the average vote from commentors is generally higher than your actual average, those who find a shot boring aren't likely to comment on it when posted for individual review. You can probably knock off a couple points to get a better idea of how it would REALLY do in a Challenge.
FWIW... I've had post-challenge-entry remorse too, and even had outtakes marked as favorites when my real entry is bombing. Not a good feeling. |

I signed up for this site to look at good photos, so, enough text already and post your image. Forget your conscience, no penalty points here for posting extra images to threads.

That`s my point Bill, I did post my image to the outtakes along with many other members..I wasn`t asking for critique particularly..so anyone commenting would be doing so because they wanted to.. presumably.
However, it did appear to be quite popular..which made me wonder if I had chosen the wrong image to submit..or is it all subject to the conditions I outlined in my first posting. |
