I didn't vote for Kerry, for many of the reasons listed in this thread; there are any number of people I'd rather see as President. However, our electoral system seems only prepared to offer a choice between Kerry and Bush, and that should be a no-brainer for anyone with a net worth under a million dollars or so ... maybe 95% of the population. I don't consider serfdom a career option for me or my son.

So what your saying is that you see Kerry's empty glass as half full?
Anyone who isn't looking for a free handout from people who actualy work for a living should vote for Kerry! BTW: Have you ever heard a single comment from Kerry on what he would do differently? Other than taxing everyone who is middle class and above to death, I haven't heard any! |

I don't believe that the veracity of the administration of the Pennsylvania State Department of Labor and Industry is really "one of the primary issues of the day". You may, of course, disagree.
By the way, as I have asked before, if/when you quote me, please do so correctly. I did not say what you quoted me as saying. That line appears in an exerpt that I quoted directly from a release issued by the the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, which I correctly credited in my post.

True, but as people have pointed out, not being Mr. Bush is one of Mr. Kerry's most positive attributes ... sometimes you have to define the image by its surrounding space, like a silhouette ... |

Very good point Paul....I'm in Central Pennsylvania and I know first hand those figures don't show those who have exhausted their unemployment benefits. Especially those once two income households...The income is down the one job is gone and the unemployment is done for, the household income is over the level to obtain welfare so those families don't reflect in the state reports. I live in one of those households...and I see it all around me. I also see the families who have to relocate...again those reports don't show those facts either, so yeah the figures can be up.
Come to Altoona ask an unemployed Railroad worker why they are out of a job or better yet ask them who is responsible for allowing the closing down of the Berwind White Facilities.

From the same Pennsylvania Dept. of Labor and Industry - for the Altoona Area:
"HARRISBURG (JUNE 29) – The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the Altoona Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) held steady at 4.7 percent for May, four-tenths of a percentage point lower than last year. Pennsylvania’s rate dropped two-tenths of a percentage point to 5.1 percent, making it seven consecutive months that the rate has been below 5.4 percent. Over the year, the commonwealth’s rate went
down five-tenths of a percentage point. The national rate held steady at 5.6 percent in May.
Additional highlights follow:
â€Â¢ In the Altoona MSA, there were 1,200 more residents working this May (63,000) compared to May 2003. The unemployment level (3,100) was 200 lower than last year.
â€Â¢ Nonfarm jobs went up 800 to 62,200. In May of last year, nonfarm jobs were at 62,100.
â€Â¢ Goods producers were up 300 to 11,500 jobs, with the increase split between construction, durable goods manufacturing and non-durable goods manufacturing. Total manufacturing jobs were at their highest level since this past December. Non-durable goods manufacturing employers added jobs for the first time since August 2003.
â€Â¢ Service providing jobs climbed 500 to 50,700 in May, due primarily to an increase of 300 jobs in leisure & hospitality. Service providers’ total jobs went up for the fourth consecutive month and were 200 higher than last year’s level. Professional & business services jobs were up 6.5 percent over the year and 20 percent since May 2000."
I highlighted that last line for Paul's benefit, since he asked how many of those jobs were minimum-wage, etc. Note that Professional & business services job are up 20% since Bush took office. I would bet that most of those are not minimum wage jobs.
I understand that any unemployment is severe unemployment when you, or someone you know, are among the unemployed. However, even if the counts of unemployed do not consider those who have stopped looking, or have run out of benefits, the facts still show that the number of those gaining employment is rising considerably - in Altoona
Ron.

| Might I point this one out...LEISURE & HOSPITALITY in Altoona job market that means S-E-A-S-O-N-A-L jobs! Mostly contributed to the Altoona Curve, DelGrosso Amusement Park, and Lakemont Park. These are mostly seasonal and minimum wage jobs but oh yeah they make the market look better. As for being higher than last year...of course they are after all Blair County Ballpark enlarged its capcity this year.

Bush officials try to cherry-pick statistics; it's still worst job creation record in 60 years
"Two government surveys measure employment. The payroll survey collects data from 400,000 employers and is the source of the official employment figures that are reported at the beginning of each month. The household survey, as its name suggests, collects its data from about 60,000 households. Both paint the picture of a recovery with the worst job creation record since the end of World War II."
"...the household survey, including the self-employed, shows record low average yearly employment growth — only 0.6 percent since the beginning of the recovery."
"The claim that employment is at a record high is cherry-picking at its most blatant, an attempt to find improvements that are simply not there. Yes, the number of working people has grown, but population has grown faster. In fact, employment has grown only half as fast as what̢۪s needed just to keep even with population growth."
"Failing to find solace in the employment numbers, the administration points instead to the 5.6 percent unemployment rate. Although the unemployment rate has fallen, it has happened because record numbers of people have abandoned the search for jobs that don̢۪t exist. Long-term unemployment is at a peak compared to the same point in the previous four recessions. In February, nearly one-fourth of unemployed people had been out of work at least six months. The average unemployment spell is 20.3 weeks, the longest average unemployment duration in more than 20 years."

If you pick and chose what you want to believe, what do you think you will end up with? Any numbers that don't support your agenda have to be lies.
By the way, I'm far from rich and my tax return nearly doubled when Bush took office.
Also note, the economy is heading up today and the downturn in the economy started before Bush took office and then got worse after 9/11. The downturn started when people realized the internet stocks and the .com stuff was over valued. That was Wall Streets fault, not a presidents fault.
Also, also note, the world trade center bombings were planned before Bush was in charge. Note that there has not been a second attack on US soil. The terroist already hated us, but at least now we are fighting back.
Now, when you're done bashing Bush (amazing how people can't follow simple directions) other then not being Bush, why should anyone vote for Kerry? We all agree Kerry is not Bush so there is no more need to bash Bush. |

David Malpass is the Chief Global Economist for Bear Stearns, a leading global investment banking, securities trading and brokerage firm.
From a Q&A session with David on May 11, 2004:
"Isn̢۪t unemployment much worse than indicated by the headline unemployment rate?
The government releases several measures of unemployment: the conventional one which shows a 5.6 percent rate; a measure now at 5.9 percent which takes into account discouraged workers; and a broader measure, now at 8.4 percent, which measures the whole pool of available workers by adding to the unemployed and discouraged workers those individuals who say they would like a job but aren̢۪t currently looking for one.
In all three measures the current unemployment rate is below that recorded in the mid-1990s and well below the peaks after the recessions of 1990-91 and 1982.
Why are temporary jobs increasing?
Temporary help-services jobs have been on the rise, but this is normal at this stage of the economic cycle. Temporary jobs are a reliable leading indicator of permanent jobs. Firms often increase temporary hiring until they are relatively certain that the employment need will be sustained. Then they make the positions permanent.
But aren̢۪t most of the new jobs being created as part-time jobs?
In April, net new jobs in the establishment survey were 288,000, while part-time jobs actually fell 159,000. The two figures are not comparable. The data on part-time jobs comes from the household survey. In contrast, there were 308,000 net new jobs in March and 296,000 net part-time jobs. The March increase was simply a catch-up month in a volatile time series.
Over the three months ending in April, part-time employment was down 140,000. Over the six months ending in April, it fell 226,000. In contrast, over the past six months, non-farm payrolls have increased 958,000. Hence, contrary to the naysayer contention, part-time employment has actually been declining while jobs have been on the rise.
Aren̢۪t high-paying manufacturing jobs being lost while the service-sector jobs being created are low-paying?
Over the past six months, service jobs excluding retail and leisure have risen by more than 574,000 while manufacturing jobs were unchanged. Lower-paying retail and leisure jobs rose 237,000.
That said, average earnings in service-sector jobs have almost reached parity with average earnings for manufacturing jobs. (This transition has taken place over the past 20 years.) Moreover, the service-sector jobs being created today are in areas where wages are higher than in manufacturing."

Right you are, Gordon. I missed that. To set the record straight - Kerry doesn't want to tax those in the middle class to death. In fact, he wants to reduce their taxes even more.
Not only would Kerry like to reduce the taxes they pay, but in fact, he would actually like to give them back ALL of the taxes they pay PLUS give them even more money out of the government coffers.
Kerry wants to add several additional classes of what are called "refundable tax credits". Some of his proposals are, for example, a higher education tax credit, and a health-insurance premium tax credit.
Now, one would think that something called a "refundable tax credit" would only be a credit against taxes actually paid, but that's not the case. Oh, no. Refundable tax credits can actually, and often do, exceed the amount of taxes paid, resulting in the govenment actually sending a "refund" of money that was never paid in taxes. This money comes from ( you guessed it ) the increased taxes levied on the wealthy ( who, for the most part, are exempt from claiming those tax credits ).
Some might call it forced income redistribution through the coercive power of govenment.
Hmmm. Now THERE's a reason to vote for Kerry. If you're in the lower or middle class, He actually wants to PAY you for your vote.

That's sounds alright with me! Afterall, the corporations and rich have been paying the politicians for their votes for years...about time that the lower and middle classes get paid for their votes. If word gets around, could mean problems for the Bush campaign.

We live in a corporate welfare state and still, the corporations rip off their employees (ala Enron), perpetuate criminal activities, pollute with minimal penalties, pay minimum wage and union bust, and rig the system to pave the way for their monopolies and oligopolies. And then, as if that wasn't enough, they cry when they have to pay their fare share of the taxes and threaten to move their operations overseas. The corporations, real patriots...NOT! |

Just out of curiosity, Olyuzi - just what would you consider a "fair share" of taxes. Assuming that you prefer a regressive, er, I mean, PROgrassive tax structure, what would be a "fair" percentage of taxes to you for individual incomes of say $0-$9,999; $10,000-$49,999; $50,000-$99,9990; $100,000-$200,000; over $200,000? |

What does Kerry consider middle class and what does he consider wealthy? What income brackets will get those tax breaks and rebates? What brackets will get slammed?

the saddest part about this whole thing is the state of the democratic party. at a time when a president is about as vulnerable as ever, the challenging party can̢۪t get a candidate which people in their own party are excited about. no one can come up with enough good reasons to vote for him, yet he was picked to represent the democrats. that̢۪s not good news.

A bit Sophomoric, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of this.

KERRY RESUME FOR PRESIDENT
(Please forward this message to all voters. Visit Kerry-04.com
for the full story on John Forbes Kerry.
You may also view John Kerry's Resume in HTML format at
//kerry-04.com/about/resume.php .)
JOHN FORBES KERRY, "MAN OF THE PEOPLE"
CAREER OBJECTIVE
President of the United States, Renter of the Lincoln bedroom,
Intern Supervisor, Commander and Chief and Defender of the Working
Man, I mean Person
EDUCATION
Educated at Swiss Boarding Schools -- because my parents did not
like me that much
Attended elite private schools like Fessenden School in West
Newton, Massachusetts and St. Paul's in New Hampshire -- just
like your kids
Graduated Yale University, 1966 (I am much smarter than that Bush
guy -- oh, wait, he also went to Yale.)
Graduated Boston College Law School in 1976 (I am much smarter
than that Bush guy -- oh, wait, he got an MBA from Harvard.)
VIETNAM MILITARY SERVICE
Served as an officer on a swiftboat in the Mekong Delta in
VIETNAM for three long months -- tried my best to come home a
hero like JFK after his service on PT-109. I was in VIETNAM --
VIETNAM was a place where I was for a while. Did I mention that
VIETNAM veterans love me?
I collected three Purple Hearts in my three months (had to get
three in order to come home and run for Congress as a hero like
JFK) and the last one for that scratch on my finger -- it REALLY
did hurt! It was important to have the right connections so I
could get home and run for Congress on my hero status like JFK --
he was not in VIETNAM, but I was.
Brought my own motion camera to make sure images of me in VIETNAM
becoming a hero made it back home to the states. Got a free trip
home after three months on my swiftboat where I suffered severe
injuries and collected three Purple Hearts (did I mention that),
a Bronze and Silver Star for heroism -- ensuring my destiny as
a hero and man of the people like JFK.
Got home and found out they were not bestowing hero status on
war heroes like me, so I threw my medals, or was it my ribbons,
over the White House fence. Maybe it was someone else's medals.
Co-founder of the VIETNAM Veterans of America and spokesperson
for the VIETNAM Veterans Against the War and worked closely with
Jane Fonda to make sure everyone knew that all the guys in VIETNAM
were war criminals -- I was too, and even testified before the
Senate about my own war crimes.
"Represented" my cadre of anti-American misfits in a Paris meeting
to discuss how we could better provide "aid and comfort" for
the North Vietnamese and to discuss the unconditional surrender
of the U.S. In doing so, I knowingly, directly violated UCMJ
Article 104 part 904, and U.S. Code 18 U.S.C. 953.
Did I mention that this meeting, and my other anti-American
activities, also put me in violation of the Constitution's Article
three, Section three, which defines treason as "giving aid and
comfort" to the enemy in time of warfare.
Consequently, I stand subject to the Constitution's Fourteenth
Amendment, Section 3, which states, "No person shall be a Senator
or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and
Vice-President...having previously taken an oath...to support
the Constitution of the United States, [who has] engaged in
insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or
comfort to the enemies thereof."
But I don't have to resign -- I am understudy to Teddy Kennedy,
now the patriarch of JFK's family.
I topped off my coddling of Commies by authoring a book called The
New Soldier -- but since military heroes are back in vogue, I now
sue anyone who reproduces the cover of that book on any website,
especially a website like //kerry-04.com/. (The cover picture
is a mockery of the Iwo Jima flag raising -- you can see it at
//kerry-04.com/ until my lawyers get them to take it down.)

CONGRESSIONAL "SERVICE"
Volunteered as a campaign worker for my mentor, Teddy Kennedy
in 1962. I just love that big lug!
My first campaign for Congress was in 1972 -- I was a war
hero like JFK but nobody noticed so I ran on my anti-American
platform. I won the primary with a little help from my campaign
manager (brother Cameron) who broke into my opponents campaign
headquarters. Unfortunately, because of that Watergate thing,
I lost the general election to a Republican even after spending
more than any other Congressional campaign in the nation.
In 1982, with the help of Uncle Teddy, I got elected as lieutenant
governor for governor Michael Dukakis -- then got elected to the
Senate in 1984 -- it has been smooth sailing ever since.
I have dedicated the last 20 years, between wives and vacation
homes, promoting big government spending (except in defense and
intelligence, which I vote against every chance I get), class
warfare, the welfare state and general wealth redistribution, any
kind of abortion on demand (without parental consent for minors),
and obstructionist tactics in the judicial nominee process.
According to Americans for Democratic [sic] Action, a far-left
watchdog group, I have a higher lifetime liberal voting record
at 93% than Ted Kennedy with 88%
I am the ranking Democrat member of the Committee on Small Business
and Entrepreneurship. My current millionaire wife is heiress of
the Heinz Ketchup fortune -- a "small" business
Ranking member of the Hispanic Task Force, even though I "borked"
Miguel Estrada
Chaired the Senate Democratic Leadership Steering and Coordination
Committee
In 1987, teemed up with Teddy to get an override of presidential
veto of Boston's Big Dig Boondoggle -- one of the most larded
distributions of taxpayer largess in U.S. history.
In 1991 the Senate created the Select Senate Committee on POW/MIA
Affairs to investigate the possibility that U.S. prisoners of
war and soldiers designated missing in action were still alive
in Vietnam. Acting as chairman, I helped persuade the group to
vote unanimously that no American servicemen still remained in
Vietnam. In doing so, I helped begin the process of normalizing
U.S.-Vietnamese relations.
Wealthiest senator ("man of the people"), with an estimated net
worth of nearly $200 million (that's $800 million if you combine
it with my current wife's assets)
POLITICAL POSTURING AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
ABORTION
Voted to federally fund abortions
Voted against parental consent for minors
Voted against ban on Partial Birth Abortion (3 times)
Voted against ban on sending money to UN population fund --
the money was sent to pay for China's forced abortion and
sterilization policy
Have been warned by Catholic clergy that I will not be served
communion due to my stance on this issue
NARAL lifetime rating of 100%; National Right to Life
Committee lifetime rating of 0%
DEATH PENALTY
Oppose federal and/or state death penalty (except for innocent
unborn children -- see above)
Voted against death penalty for terrorists
Voted against death penalty for drug-related murders
TAXES & ECONOMICS
I like high taxes and want to raise them
Voted against all three Bush tax cuts & want to repeal them
Voted for 1993 Clinton tax hike (largest in history)
Voted against major tax relief packages at least 10 times
Support re-raising taxes on the wealthy to redistribute money
for healthcare and education -- i.e., Socialism

million unemployed people in the U.S.
Want to raise the minimum wage, which will result in
outsourcing and the loss of jobs Voted at least 5 times
against balanced budget amendments
Voted at least 5 times to raid the Social Security Trust Fund

Favor UN control of remaining U.S. Troops
Voted for 7 major reductions in military funding
Voted against Gulf War I (1991)
Voted for Gulf War II -- but then criticized and voted against
military appropriation for troops
Voted against MX missile, Trident Submarine, SDI (Strategic
