My best friend Claudia is from Targu Mures but goes to school in the U.S. most of the year. I went to Romania to visit her last summer. I'm hoping to go back next summer, if I can save up some money. |

And 4 others (the best of my rejects) that I can't post yet because they have the same content as my entry.

I think thats a really good image, but from my experience many people here on dpc are too obsessed with the rule of thirds and vote down centered compositions. |

I ended up not submitting it because I felt it was just eye-candy, with nothing to say.

thanks :) i agree that it wouldn't have scored well...the place is so huge, though...not too many ways to shoot it other than centered.

I like this pic as you've really captured the texture of the sand really well...amazing lens on that E10. Color of sky seems to me to be the weak point of this shot. Also, the lighting and shadows are wonderful too. |
I chose to not use it because of the issues with removing noise in the sky. By the time I removed enough, too much detail was lost in the sand. Real tough shot to compress under 150K. There is sand blowing off a couples of dunes that in this resolution & file size, get lost.
On a side note, at least my miserable start is now up to 11 votes, with 4.6364 - starting to feel much better....
:) |
It was advanced editing, so you could have just selected the sky and reduced the noise, leaving all the sand in tact :)

I did not increase saturation at all. This image is a little dark so I included full image rather than just thumbnail. I kind of liked getting the inspiration into the picture, but unfortunately cut off her feet in framing the picture. She was running away pretty fast so did not get a second chance.

Hi Ben,
I know, and I tried, but then lost the detail of the sand blowing off the edges. These kind of shots lose so much getting the file size down to under 150K, even saving for web and stripping non-image data. Moire was another issue.
Oh well. based on what you have seen so far in the Challenge, where would it fall in your opinion?
(Still love that shot myself. Makes a real neat wallpaper too)

Might have submitted one of these, or another from that series....that is I might have if my camera didn't reset itself again and show "None" in all of the date categories on the EXIF...#&^@&& camera! (side issue: any other Oly-5050 users experience this when the batteries are taken out for several hours??).

Next side issue - do these look blotchy on your screen?? They look ultra compressed, blotchy and fuzzy in places to me, the originals are really, really sharp. |

Yes, they do have a lot of compression artifacts. But they are only 30-40K in size, so that is not surprising. Optimizing them to utilize the full 150K of permitted space would help greatly in that regard.

How do I do that? The files I uploaded are 300-400k, don't know what controls or how to change the compression level. |

Depends on which program you are using... if you are using a recent version of Photoshop, check out my post in this thread on optimizing your images for DPC submission. |

my c750 will lose all its memory if the batteries are out for more than a few hours, thats why i always put in spare batteries when im charging my main ones. |

Well, it's happened to me twice of consequence re: this site, so I'm going to be more careful. At least I know why it's doing that now.
As for my compression artifacts, thanks EddyG, seems I was not sizing the image to 640 before uploading so some major compression was occurring after the fact...looked nasty. Still not fond of the appearance as shrunken down, but they are better now...
