Yes me too, pleaseeeeee pretty please let's have a July free study! I'm going to the Greek islands for 2 weeks, I'm sure to have a few thousand photos! One of them is bound to be very good!

I haven't heard anything official, but the trend is towards a quarterly free study...

Amen...there are 767 submissions to vote and comment on right now...I don't think I could do that every month! ;o)

Let's skip July and do August as a free study...that would be great...not that me going on a cruise has anything to do with it, just a sugestion.

I think it's been mentioned before to have them quarterly.. So March, June.... September. |

I've been an advocate for monthly ones for a while - and looking at the flood of June entries I think it should be implemented. It would prevent people from bunching their good shots all into one weighty challenge and would lesten the formidable task of voting.
As it is many voters may already be selecting by thumbnail to choose the images to vote on, which will rule out those shots with good levels of detail favouring those with symbolic impact at small size. |

Can we have a poll on this, as I'd hate for there not to be a July challenge if most people actually want one. You don't have to vote on EVERY image, if you don't have the time!
I agree with Imagineer... if there was one every month, perhaps there would be less of a rush to get any photo in for this novelty challenge. |

BTW, what's the point of having them every 3 months? I just don't get this. |

I second that, a poll would be a good idea. I also wouldn't mind seeing a monthly free study challenge. |

Isn't scoring somewhat arbitrary without a theme? I like the idea of my photo being voted on based on quality rather than meeting a challenge, but I wonder if there's the possibility scoring will be so tight between different genres (a portrait getting 6.8432 and a landscape getting 6.8543, say), that scoring will end up being somewhat pointless? In the case of the portrait and landscape, you really can't discern the 'better' shot.
Or maybe I'm just burbling there. ;-) |

yes I blame the voters for my low score, yeah yeah, thats it.
my mediocre photo has NOTHING to do with the score, honest ;) LOL
Honestly, I thought it would do a bit better than it is now. I guess its time for a reality check, as this is the first pic in a while I thought would do better than it is doing. I normally feel my pics will score lower than they do. I guess thats what I get for thinking ...LOL

Personally, I think having free studies all the time would lessen the "challenge" aspect of DPC. The thing I like most about DPC compared to most of the other online photo competition sites out there is that it challenges folks to photograph things/situations they might not normally photograph with technqiues they might never otherwise try. If there was a monthly free study that folks could always count on, many would just take pictures for that "challenge" (I use that term loosely, since there is no challenge any more) only, completely ignoring the themed challenges. And I don't see that as a "good thing" for the site.
Quite honestly, I don't like the fact that the free study challenges are as predictable as they are. Predictability allows for manipulation. If they are going to continue, I'd prefer to see them announced randomly as extra challenges of varying durations (some 3 days, some 5 days, some 10 days, etc.)
Luckily, there are plenty of other photo competition sites where you can submit your favorite shots -- even if they don't fit into a challenge here at DPC. But I personally don't want to see DPC turn into "just another topic-free online photo competition". DPC has a good niche in this "market", and I think it should try to maintain its uniqueness.

I agree with EddyG on this, also the element of not knowing when a free challenge is going to happen keeeps you on your toes.
Keep up the good work guys and gals. |

I don't think it would change much, mainly because this is a Member 'challenge'. People don't stop taking good pictures just because there's no Monthly challenge. It simply offers a vehicle to have them evaluated on a number of criteria on a regular basis. If it didn't work, then either people wouldn't submit, or people wouldn't vote on them.
I'm certain the themed challenges would still be the main focus, but the Free Study is also a useful way of putting a quality shot in your portfolio without using yet more of the 10MB space! :) |
