Any tricks to getting shots over a hot runway. I got this Top Fueler racing a MIG-15 this weekend at an airshow but the heat coming off the runway made it all wiggly looking. How does one shoot through that mirage effect.

You use one of those mirrors with 10,000 adjustable facets like are being used on newer telescopes. Oh, and a bunch of computers to run it ...

I think the heat shimmer adds to the "atmosphere" of the shot anyway ... helps give you a feel for what it was like to be there. Nice capture regardless! |

What a great plane! I saw this same one (I think) at the Van Nuys Airport open house. No flying because of neighborhood complaines, but a sweet plane!

I can't imagine any way to get rid of the steam - it's essentially water, which is pretty hard to shoot through without some distortion. Just plan your photo to take advantage of it. I think it adds a neat effect to the image and gives the viewer just one more piece of info about what it was like to be there. Nice shot, BTW!

Very nice shot! The dragster and plane look fine to me.
That mountain in the background sure looks familiar. Of course they all look like that in so Cal. But I used to live in Ramona. Is that the Ramona airport? I used to live just down the road from Mt. Woodson where I would go climbing on a nearly daily basis. Just curious. |

Hey - rather than try to get rid of it... try to MAXIMIZE it - I've seen a lot of great images using that effect.

IIRC, the phenomenon seen on hot surfaces is known as atmospheric distortion, which is caused by air currents. Air near hot surfaces rises quickly, bending light passing through it.
