We all like side challenges, right? Well get ready for this one!! Join the fun!

Starting January 1, 2026 we are planning a "monthly" side challenge which will result, by the time we get to December, in a 2027 Yearly DPC Calendar.
We plan to make this calendar downloadable/printable/viewable to all (details on exactly how this will work to come later).

Here's the proposal:
1. The January side challenge opens and you post pictures taken in January. From wherever you are or were, during the month of January. They can be any format, no restriction on editing, but keep in mind that this is an entry for a wall calendar so preferably landscape or square-ish would work best. Let's assume it will be a 12 x 12 calendar format, ultimately. 12 pages. The cover will be a compilation of all 12 images.
2. You can post up to 3 or four (one/week) pictures for the month, current or archival, so long as they are/were all taken during the month of January.
3. Your entries should be freshly loaded into the thread. Please don't link to any challenge entries.
4. All commenting and constructive feedback appreciated (this is what makes side challenges fun!).
5. On Jan 31st the January thread will close and there will be a new one for February. And so on, through December.

Here's the catch:
We would like you to choose a favorite picture for each month that will ultimately be used for that month's page in a yearly calendar.
To do that,
1. As the January submission thread closes, we will open a new one called "Choose your favorite for the January Calendar" and ask that you rank your favorite in order of 1, 2, 3. No discussion in the thread please, just post your selected favorites. This thread will be open for one week. We will then assign point value to your selections as follows: 4 points for a first choice, 2 for second, 1 for third. The winner will have the highest total.
2. At the end of the week, the selected favorite will be posted to another thread titled "Monthly Calendar - Favorite of the Month".
That thread will be updated every month and in the end we will have selected favorites for a January thru December Yearly Calendar! Voila!

I'm game.

I'm a little confused about the brief in proposal point #1. What sort of subject matter are we looking to capture? Literally anything, so long as it was taken within that month? Is it something like an Extended Free Study each month? Or was the intention to capture a sense of place (i.e., "wherever you are or were" during the month)?

Your choice. Anything taken within the given month, any year. Whatever you think will fly as someone's favorite pick of the month.

Does it mean virtual photography would be allowed? It requires use of a camera, I usually use a DSLR with 30mm 1.4 prime lens and manual focus. The main difference is that the pictures are taken in a virtual world rather than the real one. Very handy if you cannot go out for any reason.

Margaret, it's ALREADY archival ... that should cover it in case, for some reason you can't go out for an entire month to capture a REAL photo.

No need to shout, I don't have to participate.

Everybody is welcome to participate. Virtual? If it depicts a scene for the month and you think people will like it, go for it!
We might prefer real photographs but without validation I guess we trust the viewer.

What a great idea, I'm in :) I'll be in Italy in May, that should give me some incredible material!
