I'm going on a cruise in August and would like to be able to take my camera on the hikes through the waterfalls and into the ocean ect...
//www.adorama.com/EWDCA1D.html
This is the cheapest thing I have found that looks like it would do the trick. I would like to know what others thought and if there is anyone out there that has purchased the Ewa-marine underwater housing.
Thanks
Clint

No specific advice, but generally you want to check the warranty on underwater housings. Make sure there's a sturdy guarantee against leakage and implosion before you buy, or you risk losing the camera cost as well.

This one has room for a sizeable air pocket that they say makes it implosion proof, guess that's good. I was also looking on ebay and found them for a hundred cheeper, and the guys on their said the case works perfectly.

I have been shooting still picture and video underwater for about 8 years now. If all you are going to be doing is snorkeling then I would suggest that you go buy one of the cheap underwater disposable cameras. You are not going to get quality shots with your 10D unless you have a high quality underwater housing. The Ewa-marine does not provide enough space between the end of your lens and the housing in order to work efficiently. Housings built for SLR by Ikelite and Subal are the way to go, but if it is something you do once a year then I would not go spend that kind of money.
Also, I doubt that your home owners insurance will cover the repair for a flooded camera. I have to take out separate insurance on my underwater photo and video equipment... and believe me, if you flood your 10D, you can probably kiss it goodbye. The salt will destroy it if you do not rinse it with fresh water immediately. I have flooded underwater strobes before and it is not pretty.
I am not trying to talk you out of the EWA, I just hate to see the 10D get flooded :)

i agree with nitrox about the 10D. that's scary buisness. :) i have always planned to get the ikelite housing for my G2 for diving--fairly expensive, but well worth it compared to replacing my 10D, and i'm perfectly happy with the versatility of that camera. if you want a little more control than a disposable has to offer--why not look into the housing for your powershot? digideep.com is a great place to start. |

I've heard this as well. If you want to do it, then you have to do it right, and those are the hard cases, not the bags. Big $$$$.
I used a disposable in Hawaii and got some good shots. Shallow water and bright light.
Good Luck |

i would never put my camera in one of those. i'd recommend a high quality housing built specifically for it.

Well the thing is I've done the disposable before and it's cool but that only allows me like 24 exposures and I want to take tons of underwater shots, and my powershot does not shoot fast enough for me when I want it to, it may sound stupid to you all that I would buy this and use it, I am going to test it out before I put anything in there of value and it will be a gamble, but then again maybe the thing will work very well and I’ll have nothing to worry about, all I can do is hope for the best, guess we’ll find out if I’m stupid or not after the 20th of August. I’ve read reviews where they have stated it never leaked one drop, hope mine performs the same way. I would buy one of the more expensive ones if I had the money, I’ll just have to make the best of this one, I think it will be fine for my needs. Thanks to all your comments. Wish I could have had one person on here that had actually used it before, but I have the other reviews, O-wellâ€Â¦hope my camera doesn’t become fish food!!

As already said before, i wouldn't put my 10d in it. It said its waterproof to 50meters???? I don't see how this is possible with soft plastic. At that depth the pressure will push all the buttons down and they will not come back up until you surface. There is a lot of pressure underwater and i would not put my 10d in anything that cost less than half the price and was rock solid. I saw someones digicam get screwed at 10 meters from a dodgy housing, he lost the camera and mysteriously couldn't contact the company that sold him the 'gaurunteed housing' |

well I'm not planning on going near that deep, just maybe 8 feet tops. This will do fine for what I want, again we'll see if it was a bad gamble or not in about a month.

Well I took your advice Alecia and I'm bought the WP-DC800 underwater case for my powershot s500. Hope it works out, I was starting to get freaked out about the bag, and was starting to really think about buying the $1000 one...but I can't afford it so I'm sure this was the best decision.
