WOW, Alessandro, that's incredible! Did you ever think about a feature film of the length of a short, about 10 times longer than this video? I mean what they have at the Oscars, some shorts carry amazing stories from the very skillful filmmakers like you :) Maybe you should try this, who knows where it could get you! :)

Unexpectedly I got sidetracked from 3D worlds into real life videography. My husband decided to start a vlog on Youtube so I got interested in doing this too. Our first vlog will be about Zermatt (we are still in Zermatt at the moment) - skiing, winter hiking, going up to Glacier Paradise etc. I am also taking timelapses of Martterhorn, skiing with Gopro attached to my helmet, jumping off the cliffs, and other exciting stuff :)

Learning to edit videos turned out to be rather difficult so I thought I will make one small fragment about snow in Zermatt and ask for feedback on this forum, the video is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wOvEgWmkrc

Is it too long? Too boring? Are sound and music OK? Are clips too short? Any suggestions for improvement? I have never done anything like this so feedback will be very appreciated :)

I think it's a good start Margaret. Most of the movements are clean, I like the real life audio over the music. There are a few clips that are not "perfect". The one at 10 seconds shows the black frame on the left (maybe it was a stabilization issue) and another couple are probably out of focus. But I like it, it's a good one. What did you use to film it?

I think you have a good sense of rhythm. each shot was a good length, not too long and not too short.

Thanks, Alessandro, and well done for spotting the black frame. I zoomed in on the clip in daVinci Resolve but I did not know how it works and did not notice the problem before I posted the video. I zoomed also on the train and it seems to be a bit blurry, Gopro resolution is not great so I should be careful using zooming in post in the future.

Most of the clips were taken with Gopro Hero 12, a couple with Iphone 11 Pro. Next week I am going to get DJI Osmo Pocket 3, it is supposed to have a very good mechanical gimbal (like those in DJI drones) and a large sensor which is good for night videos. Looking forward to try it out.

I had the Osmo Pocket 1 and I recently got the 3 (for Vlogging in Iceland) and I can say it's a wonderful device, not only for night stuff. Having a quite large sensor you can get amazing images with a decent separation between subject and background.

What about stabilization? Did you have to put it on a tripod?

Can you take decent stills with it?

No need of tripod, you can walk and film like having a camera on a gimbal (which is in some way real, because the gimbal is part of the structure). You get good stills, but it's surely not its main feature.

That's great, everything I got so far is cheaper and much smaller and lighter than my full frame gear while keeping very good quality. I will still use my Sony A7R III for stills when I need high resolution and maybe video on tripod but it seems that between the Gopro Hero 12, Iphone 15 Pro, Pocket 3 and Mini 3 Pro drone I should have sufficient variety to make our vlog interesting :)

Everyone who never watched the northern lights always wonders how it is watched with human eyes and not photography/time lapse. I gave it a try filming it at the super famous Grundarfjordur location. You can take a look at the video here

I watched it too over Reykjavik, it was very cold so the camera batteries were exhausted very quickly, and then, I did not care about taking pictures, I just watched it and absorbed. One of the greatest experiences in my life.

When you watch a strong aurora is something hard to explain. You see the sky dancing and there's nothing like that in nature...

We had kp 7, strong aurora storm, on our last night in Iceland in November 2016, we were very lucky. What was kp when you filmed? (https://auroraforecast.is/kp-index/)

For the sci-fi lovers! I had the chance to test a new sample library (as some of you know I'm a musician too) and I decided that the mood of the sounds was perfect for a sci-fi short movie. So I filmed this one in my mountains, edited it without music and then composed the score using "Kepler" library. This is what I got, a video that I really like and I'd like to know what you think about it:

That's very fine, Allesandro :-)

It's sort of beside the point, but I do have one nit: the ammo in the bandolier is WAY too big for the gun he's carrying :-)

Man, you know that much better than me, I'm not an expert, that's sure. The actor works in cinema productions, but the idea was born very quickly and we didn't go too much into details. But I hope it can a good start for a possible feature film

I am still new to videography but I am facing now a big problem with the enormous sizes of video files and constantly running out of space. My approach is to have a master copy of all videos on a standard hard-disk and then a working copy for editing of selected files on SSD. The problem is that the video files are so big (4k, Ultra HD) and I keep on running out of space on both.

What is the best strategy for storage of video files for filing and editing?

Be glad you're not making a major motion picture -- I heard once that it costs many thousands per year to maintain the archives, and that digital originals will cost about 10 times that of archiving film stock ...

If your files are <4GB you could back them up to DVDs, otherwise my guess is that you just have to get the biggest hard drives you can.

No movies planned ;) The largest files are from Gopro recording our bicycle rides. We did the St Gotthard Pass last week and the files where 2 to 10 GB each. I am planning to do a "real-time" record of the ride on the old Tremola road, that will be based on around 100 GB of footage.

It looks that this new hobby will save me money on video equipment (I am now only using Gopro and Iphone plus Sony RX100 for stills) but I will need to spend more on storage. I still have Sony A7R, 24-105 and 16-35 lenses, I have now incentive to sell the rest of my full-frame gear and invest in 20TB HDD and 4TB SSD.

It's the big, huge problem for filmmakers. I have 50 hard-disks (and counting) and the only real way is to back-up and buy other ones

How do you manage 50 disks, are they all accessible or only the most recent ones? Do you use RAID?
