Well, I took a chance on my Selective Desaturation entry and it looks as though it was a mistake. Below is what I was going to enter, but thought it was rather plain.


Comments? What would you have scored it?

It evokes quite a sadness...it's also well-done. The reflections in the headstone are a tad distracting, but I would have scored it a 6 or 7 anyway. Good picture. :o)

I think the flower may have been better facing the other way around, a 6 anyway for me.

thanks. I probably should have entered this one, or not tested the waters with the one I did submit. Any other comments on this would be appreciated and helpful.

I agree. Well done. Prolly a 7-8 depending on the flower size, position, and proportion.

I agree with the flower being turned around..but you can make this picture a little better by adding some dark green to the leaves and that will add just a little more color and wont make it so "blah" like what you first said.

Looks like all my ideas for making it a better shot have been taken... ::grin::

- taken from the other angle so as to have the flower facing the camera

- use a polarizing filter to get rid of the reflections (though that might not work on granite -- never tried)

- and add a bit of green to the stems. May have even been worth using a quick mask gradient to blend the stems and leaves from green to b&w, too

- personally, I also think that the b&w portions are a bit too high-contrast and fight a bit with the color point. As a plain b&w, such contrast would be perfect in my book, but to me, that's one of the tweaks that need to be made for a successful desaturation.

Overall, I would have given it a 6, but don't be fooled -- I'm one of those jerks that scores rather notoriously hard! ::grin::

Wow, I thought this thread was dead. :)

To comment on a few of the suggestions:

I did use a polarizer and this was the best that I could get the reflections. They were a lot worse.

I only left one color because I figured people would vote it down if there was more that one color. In the case of this photo, I could see comments like, " That's a rose against a grey tombstone, that's not selective desaturation! What were you thinking? Duh!" :)

I tend to make my B&W shots higher contrast. I'm still working on figuring out when it is appropriate and when it is not, so I'm glad you made this comment.

I also agree with the comments about the direction of the rose.
