For this upcoming challenge, can I create render a layer for the BG?

Its advanced editing, isn't it?

Unfortunately, no. The rules specifically prevent adding anything:
using tools to duplicate, create, or move major elements of your photograph is not.
The entire background would be considered a "major element".

okay, that's fair...i guess. But what are folks without studios supposed to do? I thought challenges were supposed to be all inclusive?
I guess I am stuck with curves layer, eh?

I've been going through our linen closet to find suitable substitute backgrounds...if you have a nice sheet or tablecloth or something like that it might work, hung up on a wall or something. I saw an article recently about backgrounds...I'll try to find it and post a link. :o)

You don;t need a studio. Just remember to fill the frame.

Here's one from BetterPhoto.com on how to make your own. Another idea I've heard of is buying one of those painter's dropclothes (the heavy-duty off-white linen kind, not the cheapy paper/plastic throw away kind!) at Home Depot and sponge painting it...

Well, I can't find the article now...it was in Popular Photography a month or two ago but I can't find it on their website. It talked about using oriental rugs, room divider screens, large pieces of foam core, or even beaded or mylar curtains in doorways. It was very interesting. I've got to experiment this week! ;o)
