Well, I'm feeling better after England won and my desat pic has moved from 4.4 this morning to 4.9848 tonight (63 votes).

Browsing through my snaps I came across this Owl pic, boy I should have gone back within the challenge dates to reshoot this.

Edditid four speiling and to say I briefly hit 5.000

this a zoo animal? I can't see how you'd reshoot it otherwise.

Yeah would've been good in my voting. Although, most 'eye' shots I scored a point lower for not being very original.

Yes, it is a wildlife park bird, a European Eagle Owl. How would your voting be? I'm currently on 5.000 (call me Mr average ;)

Thanks for the comment on the pic tyt2000, we live and learn.

I would have given it an 8 or 9, I really liked the crop. My only suggestion is to have the eye just a little bit lower while still having the beak in the frame, or leaving a little space at the top :)

Andi, that is really a great shot. I'd have scored it pretty high. I think it's pretty unique in the fact that it's an animal and it's one eye.

As a side note...I don't think it's very fair to vote down all shots of the same theme (i.e. eye shots) because of unoriginality...they were all original to the photographer who entered them, and they had no way of knowing who else would be doing the same type of shot. I have had some comments to that effect on my choices entry, which is a shame since I really think it's a decent picture, regardless of the others who submitted the same subject. Blah blah blah...you know the story, it's been repeated on dozens of threads. I'll shut up now.

The texture is amazing. The color is bold compared to a human's eye color. The point of selective desaturation (in my opinion) is to draw the viewer's attention to the colored region. This is highly effective at doing so, I would've given this an 8 initally. And probably a 7 after review (for being yet another 'eye' photo, like I said before)

To put the 7 in perspective, I gave out 3 - 10's, 2 - 9's, 9 - 8's, and 8 - 7's. In the top 20%, and in very good company.

Another case of Andi doesn't know what to submit! but I do enjoy learning. I'd like to suggest a 'sounding board' here, somewhere/someone we could show a proposed submission too before the voting starts? I hope I'm not breaking any rules but I have uploaded pics to another forum for critique before.

But it IS unoriginal. That is the point. Because others thought of the same thing and submitted it, it's not as original. I think it's fairly easy to figure out that having just the eyes in color is going to be a fairly common subject used in this challenge. To be original you need to think outside the box. To have a photo that, yes, it fits the challenge, but 20 other people did the same thing, DEFINES the box, rather than goes outside it.

Whether or not being original or not is worth losing a point in voting or not, is a slightly different aspect. We all vote on each photo for different reasons. People look for composition, color tones, exposure, depth of focus, originality, cropping, photoshoping... you get the idea, maybe laurieblack votes based on composition, exposure and color, while tyt2000 votes on color tones, depth of focus, and cropping. Or maybe Ecce Signum uses all of these values to vote. The point is originality and creativity are worth more to me than getting the exposure correct. That's just the way I vote.

I'm glad we are all different, makes the world (and dpc voting) more exiting. I'd say the owl shot was stock/classic rather than original but then again, my submission whilst not original is different and for those not in the know the colours probably don't seem real and I think I'm losing more points for that than not being original (furry animals and flowers for my next challenge methinks)

That would take away the anonymity of the voting process. Also, it gives the submitter an unfair advantage of having already discussed and received comments on a submission. I like that the submissions are anonymous during the judging, and that the voters can't see what comments have already been made. It is very easy to be subconsciously influenced by popular opinion or even just familiarity.

I don't mean show the pic to everyone before a challenge, moreover to 1 maybe 2 people that would maybe not vote on that pic (honesty), not that 1 biased vote would make a difference. I find I switch submissions and always, yes always choose the wrong one

I tend to go challenging myself rather than trying to come up with something the majority might like. And if I can create an image that the majority thinks is rather exciting, it would definitely be a huge bonus. It's down to my ideas and how I see and how I think.
