I would like to suggest a limited entry challenge. Something like Only twenty entries allowed.
The challenge topic would have to be imaginative and not too closed to interpretation.
Examples:
Landscape
B&W texture
Sound
Red, but cannot be vegetation or textile

I think it would bring some very interesting photos

Any thoughts?

How would you determine who can submit? Would you suggest taking only the first 20 entries?

If you took the first 20 you'd be favouring people in certain time zones some of us would never get a look in

People would submit anything just to hold a spot and then upload the real image later.

Make the picture taking 6 days long, then at a set time at the end open up for submissions and whoever the first 20 are, get it. But even that would favor the DSL/Cable modem over the dialup folk.

Best to make it a lottery.

What time zone would that be in? Hopefully nicely late afternoon for Australia.

Make it a lottery makes it fairer, but then you have a random selection of just 20 shots from the field of say 200. I'll be honest, I am not going to go to an awful lot of bother to take a shot for a challenge I then only have a 10% or less chance of entering.

Sorry, I really don't seem to see the point on this one.

I also fail to see the point, except making yourself "place higher" in your mind.

A speed challenge is more effective, and 100% more fair.

You all made very good points.

I agree the time zone thing may be a problem and this "spot" holding could/should not happen.

I just would like to see more frequent challenges, less time submitting and less time voting. I would rather see 50 picture to vote on then 200 or so pictures. Now thruthfully, how objective are you when you are looking at the 245th picture? Are you rating it the same way as the first picture you saw in the challenge?

You don't need to vote on the whole challenge - Every challange could be divided into the first 50 for your own voting pattern. After 100 votes, the scores change very little so in a challenge of 300, if everyone only votes on one third or 100, they can do a better job of voting and commenting. The pictures are displayed randomly. Why not pick your own personal "first twenty percent" and vote/comment on them thoughtfully. Sure you miss some, but you'd miss more if they didn't even make the page.
