is it just me or does there seem to be an over abundance of shots in the choices challenge that just dont meet the challenge? many of which depend solely on the title to try to meet the challenge... sigh... thats just not the point of a challenge...

Is it possible that you don't see how it does meet the challenge?

I agree, if you chose (no pun intended) to step into another's shoes and try to see the complete package - picture and title - you might be better able to see how it meets the challenge. People have many different ways of interpreting each challenge. I think that is one reason this group is so interesting. I learn a lot from someone else's interpretation of challenges. I like it when someone "thinks outside of the box".

I've had 4 of the 8 commenters understand my image. Even if they didn't know the specific context of it, it still shouldn't be that hard. My gosh, it's a choice we make daily, although perhaps not exactly like I photographed.

It just doesn't seem like some people are thinking at all when voting. I mean, I know that some don't, but I never expected to land at a 3.9_ with something like this, it's not bad, perhaps a bit too soft, but people aren't either thinking past the obvious (which to me it is obvious) or blah...I don't know!

My first comment was just plain rude and everyone else is saying it's blurry. Come on, softness...

it can be so hard to give an image a good rating after you have seen the exact same thing 10 times before. you can only look at so many crayon shots, coke can shots, junk food shots, shoe shots, etc....before you just cry out for originality. the image that manages to stand out as unique, and makes you say, "wow, i never would have thought about that" or makes you feel something more than just the annoyance of seeing the same thing over and over is the one which deserves to win. now that isn't to say that all the images with low scores are bad per se, some could in fact be the best, but not everyone understands what is being conveyed in a picture, and not many people want to stare at it for 5 minutes trying to decide how it fits the challenge. in a perfect world everyone would agree with each other, but as the world is far from perfect people are bound to see different things from how the artist sees his own work.

While I agree it is difficult to be fair when voting on a slew of similar images, it is important to remember that all the posters posted into a void, where no one knew which idea would be the most popular.

If you can't judge an image on its own merits because it is similar to others that also meet the challenge criteria, then be prepared for many more that are outside the envelope of applicability as people search for more ideas after rejecting thieir first, second and third ideas, because they are too "obvious".

*sighs* Sorry, I sounded a bit mean in my last post. I'm tired and jet-lagged.

I know people don't want to spend time figuring it out, so I made the title explain it, at least I thought I did. *sighs*

I've had people comment in the form of a question by saying "How does it fit the challenge" and I'm really tempted to PM them and explain it since my score is so close to tipping up to a 4. However, I've always been against doing that since it gives an "advantage" to you by going "around" the idea of the challenge voting.

well, i think it shows true creativity to come up with an idea that isn't something you would think of right off the bat. and if a photograph that has already been done 10 times really is outstanding and makes me say, wow...this is a powerful image, i will give it a ten. but so many of the over done photos are more like snapshots. there were certainly some great shots in choices that were also done by alot of other people, but somehow managed to stand out as superior. what really matters is the image itself, but having an original idea can do nothing but help...

I agree, but it's still annoying. For Habits I was one of the "nailbiter" entries. 5 of the 13 scored between 65th to 99th place (From 5.333 to 5.039) and the other 8 between 201st to 250th place (from 4.33 to 3.656).

I really doubt that my "Gnawer" didn't suffer from the other 12 nailbiter entries. I knew that a couple others would do it (I'm not naive enough to think otherwise), but how would I know that 12 others would? Anyway, I'm a little bitter, although it did do well (considering) placing in the 69th percentile, I had had higher hopes for it though.
