I really disliked everything about this challenge.

Is that rude to say? :D

I did wait until it was over...

Not exactly outtakes, but possible edits I'd have used if this wasn't a Minimal challenge. I was surprised it scored as well as it did considering the black background and that it was a little (2.4°) off-vertical. It's some rather thick acrylic paint on black construction paper folded over on an outdoor less-than-smooth table, creating the textured look.

Everyone I showed it to initially said "butterfly" but after looking at it for a while I decided it was closer to "manta ray" ...

I don't think it's rude at all. I have a hard time getting into some of the challenges where it's not so much about photography as it is about the item you're taking a photograph of (i.e. 'Legos', 'Toy Story'). Basically you're being voted / judged on your creation, not photography.

With all due respect, that's not the same as painting a Rorschach Blot or building a lego set. Being judged on your level of arts & crafts skills ...

I liked the 3D feel of your submission. I prefer the second outtake with the blue background.

I did not like it either and therefore I did not plan to participate until the last moment. I decided to find the maximum photography workaround within the rules and now look where it got me ;-)

I agree in many challenges the base model/environment/landscape plays a huge role, more than the actual creativity or skill of the photography. For example, how often does a male model win a portrait challenge? That will always be. You will never be able to change that except in your own scoring of others.
