Just wondering if anyone has used this lens before and how they liked it. I'm thinking I might purchase this to see how it goes then maybe move up to a more serious macro lens later on.
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed.

i have it. I also have the optional converter for it that doubles the magnification. i think it's a great lens. super sharp. doubles as a regular 50mm.

Do you have a 50mm lens currently? If so, I recommend buying some extension tubes and using those with your current 50mm lens. If you want to move up to a serious macro lens, I'd suggest the 100mm range (Canon 100, Sigma 105, Tamron 90). Once you buy the 50/2.5 and the "life size converter" you've spent as much as the Canon 100/2.8 Macro USM.
Of the available "100mm class" lenses, I recommend the Canon, it's the most flexible of the three, having the best focusing system. It makes a fantastic portrait and short telephoto lens.
In any case, extension tubes are a good investment. The Kenko set is a particularly good value.

This is my all time favorite macro lens and I own every one Canon makes. Very sharp, very nice working distance on a 1.6x crop body, works well with tubes if you need more mag, and it̢۪s small and light enough to always have with you. The price is not too bad either.

I used the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM with a reversed FD 50mm f/1.4 (held by hand, no coupling ring) and a 420EX flash.

Sorry, but I can never remember how to arrange the code to include the thumbnail and I'm too lazy to open a second browser window. :) I have others that I will post soon. They are all test shots taken the night I got my lens. I must say that the 50mm is N-O-I-S-Y while it focuses. I might sell it just for the USM setup in the 100mm.
PS: That was taken handheld with all "natural" fluorescent lighting in the kitchen. No flash.
