I've decided rather than buy lots of memory cards I'd opt for a mass storage device. I've been looking at Archos & FlashTax video jukeboxes but they are a little expensive for me right now. I've just found this on Ebay, only 10gb but well cheaper than the Archos or FlahTrax. Anybody got any thoughts on these? or offer alternative?
As always, thanks in advance :)

See this thread. Personally, I don't see the point of image playback on these devices. I use mine (a Tripper) purely for transfer in the field (and away from home for more than day). |

How about THIS little beast? I happened to spot it in a catalog yesterday. At US$250, it's not much cheaper than the first jukeboxes you mention, but it has Firewire and USB 2.0 (fast is good) and it stores 160Gb. Try filling THAT up on a trip! It's probably more than you wanted to spend, but there's plenty of room to double as backup for your primary computer.

The critical difference between it and other devices (like the Tripper, Archos, FlashTrash) is portability. I think Ecce Signum's intent is to carry the device around with him, in the field, so there's no need to have many memory cards. |

I simply use a 15 GB X-Drive and work on a 2 x 256MB CF card system. Works for me.

That's another feature. It doubles as exercise equipment. What a deal! |

I use my tripper 2.0 all the time, on trips I've taken to Egypt, Turkey, and other places. I love the fact of the portability with a battery, don't have to carry my laptop with me on the whole trip. Only problem was the times I wanted at night to look at the pictures we had taken, but we just had to be patient until we got back home. Although I just read an article today on a new gadget that looks promising... www.flipstartpc.com This should be interesting when it comes out, although who knows what the price point will be.

Nikon is supposed to be releasing a 30g device called CoolWalker but I cannot see where they have done it yet. It was supposed to be June of '04. |

I also use the tripper... it's fast, small and the price is right. I've been very happy with it. I got twice the storage capacity for half the price of the ipod/jukebox type devices. |

Thank you Pedro....the product is not on the Nikon Canada seller search list, either.

I had heard late may/early June as well, but haven't seen it anywhere yet. I have read that it won't be cheap tho - $750 Canuck bucks, which is about $550 US. There are cheaper options, but for Nikon users this thing looks pretty slick.

I use a Wolverine SixPac 20GB portable unit. Accepts my flash cards directly (6 kinds total), runs on a rechargeable, has usb connection for upload to my computer. It is the size of a point and shoot camera, requiring very little space in the bag. A pair of 256's and this little unit and you can shoot constantly for a long time.

I bought a 20GB Vosonic X's-Drive II ( VP2060 ) portable storage unit to augment my two 256MB CompactFlash II cards. When one of the CF cards gets full, I switch to the other and continue shooting while I offload the full card onto the Vosonic. The Drive is about the size of a paperback novel, uses rechargeable batteries and does NOT need to be hooked up to a computer when copying files to it from the memory card. In addition to CompactFlash, the Drive also accepts SMartmedia, MemoryStick, SecureDigital, MultiMediaCard, and MicroDrive cards. Pricewise, the Drive is around $200 U.S. Larger capacities are available - up to 60GB.
So far it has worked very well with the CF cards ( and an XD/CF interface card for unloading XD cards ). Though, just to be on the safe side, I never reformat a full card until it's back in the camera and I'm ready to use it. Of course, I did the same before I got the Vosonic, too.

Thanks for all the info peeps :) I'm off on a weeks holiday in a couple of weeks so decided to bite the bullet and went for this rather than spend about the same on a 1 gb card. Its not a 'big name' item but spoke with the seller who reckons they are pretty handy (well he would). 20gb, rechargeable batteries, USB 2.0 and takes compact flash directly into the unit. Oh, and I get to listen to MP3's whilst out and about too :)

Exactly the same for me. I'm definitely a happy owner.
I got mine from MyDigitalDiscount, who were quick and convenient (even delivering to the UK). |

That's where I got mine, too, though when I was ready to order, they were out of stock, so I had to wait a couple of weeks until they got in a new supply.
I bought the Vosonic primarily because the family is going on an Alaskan Cruise in a few weeks and we'll be packing 3 digital cameras in addition to the usual film varieties. There's no way I was ready to buy enough CF and XD cards to last us all that long. I'm busy right now exercising the Vosonic so that I'll be satisfied that it's up to the task. So far, it works like a charm. Even so, I'll be keeping my eyes opened for a PC that I can use to copy the pictures to a CD.

If you don't need portable, consider a USB external disk drive. I bought one from Western Digital ... 200 GB ... $200. It's the size of a large paperback book, requires power from the wall, and connects with USB 1 or 2. |
