No, you can't vote from the thumbnails.

What some people do (which I don't think too highly of) is "pick and choose" which photos to vote on based on the thumbnails (instead of just starting at the first picture and voting in the random order that images are presented). But to cast your initial vote, you must view the full-size image. Once you've made your initial vote, then you can adjust your rating from the thumbnail by clicking on the 1-10 scale that appears under the "voted on" photos.

Or you could try voting over dial-up, where you look at the thumbnails, click on the image and assign the vote, and never really see the full size image because they take so long to load... Perhaps voting should be disabled until the full image has loaded ?

The Ryder Cup may be common knowledge for Americans, but as a European I don't know what the Ryder Cup is, so I also didn't recognize the ball as such. I also didn't have a clue on the picture with Ryder Cup in the title, never imagined it would have something to do with golf. And yes, I did live in the US for over a year, I did learn to play golf there, and I even know what PGA means (but I was at a loss with LPGA, though :-)). So I guess you not only have to consider that DPC-voting is a majority vote, it is also an international vote. Which makes it even harder to have everybody understand your intentions.

I guess I don't consider a bunch of Medieval enthusiasts getting together over the weekend for a battle re-creation a 'sport.' Just as I don't consider Civil War re-enacters "athletes." But at least you got to show off your chain mail and your sword. So cheers to ya!

"I'll concede somewhat grudgingly to the last part but I find its a stretch to consider SCA stuff team sports."
[[[why, because it's not on ESPN? *ponder* See what defines a sport...?]]

"Should we also consider Civil War re-enactments team sporting events?"
[[[No, because unlike the above, the outcome is determined and arranged in a re-enactment. There is solely dramatization. Where as in heavy-combat such outcome is not determined. These people are indeed "hitting" each other and doing so in order to score very (akin to sparring in martial arts).

Have you ever played indian double-ball? it's an old sport...used to be played by several native american tribes. Two balls with a leather cord is tossed around a field with sticks. (Think something like la crosse). I played in in Boy Scouts a few times. Just cause it is an old sport only played for a nostalgia does not take away from the fact that it is a sport.

"Honestly, I didn't think it was a terrific photo"
[[[hey, that's fair...i don't mind the photo being judged on those photographic merits...and in truth, there are many things I'd have done differently if I had more time and wasn't trying to take the shot at 11:45pm.]]]

"this is an international site and some images have strong emotional resonance"
[[[I understand that...and accept that...]]]

"I think it comes down to making a simple choice: Do you want to take a picture for YOU or for OTHERS?"
[[[I am taking the pictures in part to improve my photography...which is why when someone says "uninspiring background" or "weak cropping" etc. I love it...those help me grow. I am still very new to this site and trying to get my footing.]]]

"Is the winner, if there is one, predetermined?"
[[[Actually, no...it's not role-play. Yes there are LARP groups. But for many heavy-combat groups the winner is scored by making certain contact points in a similar manner as sparring in karate or judo sports is done.]]]

"So, while I have no problem with the concept of tournaments as a team sport, I don't think this particular entry did the best job of conveying that aspect of the event to the casual and inexperienced viewer."
[[GeneralE, thanks for the comments, and I can feel that....]]]

Anyways, I am learning folks...so bear with me. I gathering it's pretty much a grin and bear it...and just accept that if you are in the the common circle with your photo expect as a given for it to be called out. And just accept it or decide to remain in the common circle. Fair enough....

I am new to this so I wasn't sure if this was common or if I was just getting unusual attention from this angle....

Sincerely,
Jason
