Although it is a lovely shot, this is where I get confused...is that deep DOF? The tree in the foreground is in focus, and the ones in the BG are softer. If that's what it is supposed to be, then no wonder I'm at a 4.50 right now! :o)

No wonder, maybe change of monitor will help :-)
I can shave on the focus on back trees ! |

Fog tends to make things look softer so I think this would have suffered from voters thinking the trees in the background had a softer focus than the one in the foreground without realizing that that is probably due to the fog.
Aside from that, the foreground tree is a little bit too central for me making the image feel a little out of balance.

I'm still a n00b, but is it possible to achieve such a "deep" DOF shooting at F2.8? Why not a (much) smaller aperture? |

Bran, f2.8 is almost wide open on most lenses. This will naturally give you a shallow dof, ie where only a limited depth of the scene is in focus.
In order to get deep dof you need to be using f11 and up, maybe as small as f32. |

VERY GOOD COMPOSITION. WELL ballanced.
IT IS a well VISIBLE BACKGROUND TOO; TREES AND THE GRASS . I WOULD GIVE a 9 OR 10
YES HERE THE GOOD MONITOR IS NECESSARY.
IT IS PLEASANT TO ME

I about died the first time I saw one of my submissions on a CRT monitor!!!!!! Totally different than at home. Much darker. Anyone else see a general result between LCD/plasmas and CRT's?

Lot of people confuse Gaussian blur with out of focus or shallow DOF.
I use 5-6 % Gausian blur at 22 % Opacity on all my Non Open Challenge photos.
That gives me softness and pleasure to look at it and does not kill all the sharpness I stil want to preserve. |

Keep the tips coming for us newbies to all this! I love the effect you achieved on this. Thank you!

The image itself is above average but, as others have noted, the fog softens the background and therefore makes deep DOF tough to show. For those that commented on the aperture, I think Kosta was just listing the lens he used. That doesn't necessariliy mean he SHOT it at f/2.8. |

You are right,Fog does make it softer, and aperture is F 6.3 on this one . |

Since the background trees are in focus (softening by fog or haze is not the same as lack of focus) I would say this qualifies for deep DOF. I think it is a lovely image which evokes a very peaceful mood and I would have scored it pretty high.
