What do you think of the idea of ranking the photographers on the site?
Not by ribbons won, but by average score.
My suggestion would be to rank Members only (another reson to join). And you must enter a min. of 20 or so challenges.
Maybe this would cut down on the tendency to enter photos that do not meet the challenge, or "just entered to see how it would do". Hopefully members would enter images that they feel will raise their average score. Thus cutting down the number of entries to score, and hopefully increasing the number of comments received.
Tie breakers could be
1- ribbons; 3pts for blue, 2 for red, 1 for yellow
2- number of challenges entered; the more the better
3- number of usefull comments
or something like that.
What do ya think?

I think this might be more of an ego thing than anything else. I don't know too many people who just enter photographs just to see how they fare. I enter them to help me improve my skills and to show people what I can do whether it's good or bad work. If this was implemented, I would be at the bottom for sure, though. :)

Your being modest> Your work is beautiful. And your average score 5.5+ is very respectable.

Not a bad idea. I can bury myself in mediocrity once again. :)

I dunno. I kind of like the present system, where everyone is more or less equal. You'd probably discourage some of the newbies or lower-ranking photographers from making comments. Sometimes it's nice to go out on a limb and do something fun without worrying about tying a boat anchor to your average. |

Hmmm. Maybe a ranking that included factors other than scores - call it a "member" rating rather than a photograpgh rating. The member rating could things such as (examples only):
a) Scores, of course
b) Percent of challenge images scored.
c) Percent of challenge images commented upon.
d) Percent of comments found useful.
e) Tutorial submissions, including "how'd they do that?"
f) Participation in other duties (site council, critique club, etc)
g) Participation in forums.
These are just ideas, but if we are searching for the "most valuable players" - it may be an idea.

Thank you for the compliments! I just see my work as average compared to those who win ribbons. One day I'll win one that's for sure! :)

I think this idea has some merit, but the proposed implementation is definitely not right.
The problem is that many people enter photos that aren't the best, knowing it, but wanting feedback, or just the fun of participating, etc. It would be a shame to discourage such risk-taking because people were afraid of their average score going down.
That having been said, here are some alternate ideas:
1. A list of the highest ribbon winners. Maybe 5 points for first place, 3 points for second, and 1 point for 3rd, and then have a list of the top 100 "winningest" photographers.
2. A "best top photos" list, where you could average the score from the 4 "best rated photos" on everyone's profiles. This would award people for having produced 4 really high quality photos, push them to keep upping themselves, while not penalizing them for having a lot of crud at the bottom of the portfolio.
3. A "hot photographers" list, which shows the photographers with the highest overall average score from the last 3 challenges they entered. (Maybe there's another factor, like they have to have entered 3 of the past 6 or something)
I think those stats would be great!

I was a little shy of agreeing with spydr's initial thought.
But I really like the tweak that you have put on it! I think that
this is a great idea! |

You may want to see my suggestion about points posted in this thread. |

I like the idea of the first two points; the third is contentious, as there are people who like to enter for all sorts of reasons, and those who only enter when they think they have a winner, those (like myself) who only enter when they either have a winner or something interesting, those who enter but with no intention of winning (and are still highly valued members of this place). There are those who are constrained from entering very often at all, those who always enter no matter what. Taking into account all of that, I think any kind of 'accurate' ranking will be pretty hard.
