These are some from my first attempts at photographing horses...and I am sneaking in two flowers (beware all flower haters!).
Comments and suggestions appreciated...I can go back to this place and reshoot as long as the weather is nice! :o)

You should of said that in the title :) (just kidding)
I like the 3'rd horse shot.

My suggestion would be to back up a bit. Horese textures are nice as part of the bigger series of pictures but you need some shots to see all of the horse, or at least the curve of the neck, the set of the head, the way the fetlock springs to a hoof. There is poetry in a horse, you are only giving us the haikus, I like heroic epic as well. I want to see his noes, his back, and then a few closeups are sweet.

Mane Attraction is my favorite of this group. I like the composition, the textures, the colors, and the excellent focus of the picture. The purple thistle is my second choice. Gorgeous color and excellent composition with this one.

I like this one best,
The first 1 has a color glare to much of it, and the horse doest stand out..
I like the other 2 for being different!

i agree, my first thought when i saw the fifth picture was that it was the back view of a punk horse with a purple mane. now that would be cool... getting over ones horse phobia (scary creatures, evil creatures!) i would say i prefer mostest the one titled "hi there". it's a tad bright perhaps, but the interesting way you've cropped it is very appealing, and the whole distorted extra large head perspective thing rocks. well done! i'd sooner see burgers made out of them, but that's just me. |

Thanks for the comments and suggestions...I've been attempting to learn PS better and I have "tweaked" this one a bit since it was kind of bright...any better? :o)

oh much! see how lusher the greens appear. what was your method of tweaking? I'm also learning PS a little bit, and have in the last couple of weeks just discovered the sheer blissful joy of curves. Try it! click somewhere on the bottom third of the S-curve and drag down, then click on the top third of the line and lift it a bit. see what wonders and joys there are to behold! |

Very nice pictures from a recent ribbon winner!
Check out this photo...two unbroken stallions playing in the horse paddy!
Taken at 6:15 am on a very foggy morning! This picture doesn't do the scene justice!

I agree with BrennanOB...back up a little. horses are such massive creatures i think you need to show a little more to give them perspective. I've had pretty good luck shooting horses, and I've found shooting them from a slightly lower vantage point helps as well. Otherwise they look like they're all body and no legs.
Some of my Horse pics can be found in here:

I was using curves, in roughly the same way you suggested. I don't know much about it at all, I just started fiddling until it looked better to my uneducated eye. Guess that's not the most scientific approach, is it? :o)
El-ROI and Pedro - thanks for the pictures...I have a lot of work to do before I can take photos like those! I'm going to reshoot today, that is if the horses cooperate! :o)

Here are some others...maybe these are better? Worse? The exposure seems a bit better to me. I am glad that I now know I won't be arrested or shot for going to photograph these beauties...since I did stop alongside the road to take them! :o)

This is the kind of thread I like, I learn so much from them. Laurie, the last 3 pictures and the before and after pics show even ribbon winners can improve :)
The profile pic above looks like a horse from down my road!

Laurie -- I foolishly added single comments to each when I should have brought all the comments together coherently. I'll know next time. I went through them one-by-one from the top. You just keeep getting better and better!!!!
