I know I need to increase the flash capablities of my camera system, but can't afford the 550EX. Whats the best bang (flash?) for the buck under a hundred bucks???

I wouldn't go anything less than the 420EX. I have one and it's great. |

How about trying a Vivitar 283 or 285HV used as a slave off camera. You can't really directly attach it to your camera because of differences in voltage, but as a slave it has distinct advantages, such as you can position it anywhere. These are very powerful flashes and have to be used in the manual mode....no TTL exposure settings. The 283 runs at $66 at B&H and the 285 is $79. A slave sensor will cost about $59 to $79. You can also buy these items on Ebay for cheap, so look there if you want additional savings. I have seen the flashes as cheap as $35.
BTW...I would opt for the 285 since it's got variable output flash and other options that the 283 doesn't have. |

What you can get for one hundred dollars is going to give you only a bit more than the built in flash, greater manual controll, but none of the features ( ettl, second curtain sync, multi flash, slave controll, ir focus assist, ect.ect.) you want. For twice your stated budget and half the 550EX's price you can get the Sigma 500 DG super ( photonote review ) for about the same price as the Canon 420EX, you get a superior feature set, in a slightly bulkier package and an inferior build quality. Whichever flash you decide you need, don't buy half the flash you want because you are short on cash, save it for something you will be happy with.
