Your answer was wonderful, Don. I have re-read it several times - and shared it, giving full credit, with a friend I know would appreciate it.
And now it looks as if the rest of us had better get busy and see whether we have anything worthy of being called art by SOMEone to enter. |

The distance between opinion and informed opinion, blather and grammar. Something beyond an epigram, with the bones of an essay. Long enough for a beginning, a middle, and an end. Longer than a sigh, but shorter than mourning. The length of at least one cookie with a sip of tea in the middle. Long enough for all the recommended articles, definite and indefinite. Room enough for examples, samples, and other tasty delights. High enough to see into the next town, wide enough to skip a stone, deep enough to drown. Mark out enough territory so you can properly inhabit it, and everyone knows it's yours. Long enough to be a demonstration of love and not merely a claim. So long that your list runs out and you actually have to grapple with some ideas. The paragraph is a generous unit of thought, and needs time enough for meditation. Think of it as a journey into perception, and your commitment to being a fearless tour guide into a photo and your mind. 200 words, in other words. |
Excellent advice, poetically constructed yet also coming to exactly 200 words according to the word count function in MS Word. (I have both poetic and empiricist traits in my nature, so curiosity led to measurement as well as to enjoyment.) We'll presume the exact number stated actually represents a general suggested magnitude, so others don't spend so much time word counting. Obsessive pixel counters can relax a little.
Happy to report that this challenge inspired me to look back over the past year, which was one with far fewer images than most due to some major competition from significant life events (now mainly resolved). I was almost surprised to find a candidate image despite that, and have already re-sized and submitted it. I'm planning on voting and commenting. Will be interested in seeing the jury mini-essays on their chosen images, whatever number of words they use.

Don, terrific writing as always. Thanks for organizing the jury and leading by example. |

Don, what a poetic description of what an artful evaluation of a photograph could be. Thank you for that. Does anyone think Ubique, the brilliant analyzer,
could be called into service for this jury? He is missed.
Also, how do we find the past âart of 2015,14, 13 challenges? I have tried the search but nothing comes up. |

wow..I just went through the 'art challenge' of the last three years and it is an amazing collection. There are so many talented artists here.
When I think that there are often over 80.000 entries for a contest and prize on Viewbug and the winners are inevitably over processed, over saturated shlock
it really makes me appreciate the talented people in this community. I have really learned so much from being here and my appreciation for imagination
and a creative eye has grown so much.
Since this is a juried challenge can we have a âPrizeâ for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place? Iâd chip in.

I don't know if the jury will pick 3 places like that. It might be all honorable mentions. |

I think that to get a paragraph such as the maestro described would be priceless. |

Hrmmm... I see a bias towards M's, S's, and T's! Only CEJ and Posthumous don't fall in line :-) |

But if you rotate the post 90° CCW they do form a nice bell curve ... |

I don't know why, but this post made me laugh out loud - for real!

Well that is certainly one way to look at it. |

Whoa... 121 entries?!?
I've been on juries before, and it was a complete blast. But you guys really have your work cut out for you! (and I don't even have mine in yet. Probably because I'm struggling to find anything artistic from the last year. :)
Obviously this year's resolution has now changed: Try to at least get some options for Art of 2017!! :D

150! Wow. Those promised paragraphs are pretty compelling!! Seriously, thanks Don and all those who stepped up to help him in this daunting task.
Now I'm off to begin to do my part - vote on all and comment on as many as I can. |

I just reviewed the images for the first time. But before I did on my home page there was a thread in my sidebar that seemed to be for the judges. Anyway, after I viewed the images it wasn't there anymore. Was I hallucinating? (I was sick - for the first time I can remember in years - Tuesday and Wednesday) Did I miss something?
So for the first run I have to say there are a lot of great images that have been submitted. 4 immediately struck me and six others held me captive in contemplation. Others were just, well, great images. Following my style I have at least a few more views to go.

ok, I have sent you several new messages. Do you see them? If not, please talk to SC. You can't be a judge if I can't communicate with you privately.
Also, do not click on "Purge Inbox"! |

If the PM thread between CEJ and posthumous was started by CEJ, then CEJ should check in his "sent box" for the exchange.
ETA: If posthumous was sending PMs to CEJ using an existing PM thread between them then maybe try starting a new one. That should definitely go to CEJ's inbox.
