I have to say that my LG G5 is a super photo smartphone. You will find it among the best ones and not the most expensive.

It has even an external module specific for photography (it doesn't add anything to the lens field, but it's more like a real camera).
You can shoot RAW and on camera HDR is absolutely SUPER! The smartphone has a double lens - the additional one is a super wideangle.
Some of my last entries have been taken with my phone:

I won my first double blue with the iPhone 7plus (blue dpc and blue posthumous) so I am partial to it. You can view all of the iPhone 7+ entries under equipment/apple/iPhone 7+ and hit browse. The 7+ has two lenses, 28 mm wide angle and 56mm "telephoto". It also goes up to a 10x zoom. The 10 x zoom has a a lot of noise in low light but I think it is good in bright light. The 1x ( no zoom) has much less noise in low light. The two lenses overlap at about 1.5x up to ? ( haven't figured it out yet) but when they overlap the pictures are really nice since the image is getting information from both lenses. It is a 12 megapixel so supposedly it should look good for larger prints but I don't have any experience with that. There is still a lot I haven't figured out yet but I have been very happy with it.

Thanks Tiberius - That S7 looks like a good bit of kit. It is definitely now in my list of serious considerations

I'll second the S7 as a good option. The camera is regarded as among the top performers in the Smart Phone category. I've been more impressed with the RAW performance than with the JPEG files, but bottom line, performance is quite good. One weird bit of behavior, though is that in order to enable RAW capture, you have to be in "Pro" mode. But Pro mode isn't a sticky setting so each time the camera app is opened, it has reverted to Auto mode, and just reinvoking Pro mode does not turn RAW capture back on. It's a bit of a hassle, and one that might well be solved by using a 3rd-party app, but frankly I don't use it so much that I've researched 3rd-party camera apps.

It is a hassle but I do prefer it like this. The RAW files are only written on the device memory. If lets say I somehow forget about the RAW it will fill my 32G built in memory in no time.

As third party app the Camera FV5 is a great app but, as with all the third party apps, I can not access is directly via short cut and is not default for other apps. My previous phone, a Sony Xperia, had a dedicated shutter button which I Loved. A long press and the camerea was on. The S7 has direct access to camera by double clicking the home button. For me that is very imprtant and no third party app can be set to do this.

If P-A-U-L wnats to switch to Android I would highly recommend the S7. I only wished it had at least 64G built in.

MAK's suggestion for Huawei is also great. I decided between his model and the S7. S7 won for its waterproofness.

And with rumors that S8 comes out you might get a good deal.

As mentioned on my initial post it's a matter of what you are used to and what you prefer. With the progress made many of them are good...

Thank you all for your really useful feedback and example photos.

I would love to say that I am closer to a decision which I guess I am as I have eliminated Google Pixel but then again there are a few new suggestions.

I can get the S7 for £26 a must month - the phone with the same allowance for the iPhone 7 plus is nearly twice that.

I suspect all these top of the range phones have very good phone cameras so for my needs all would probably all be grand.

So I just need to make that decision before this phone gives up the ghost.

Can you get one of these phones without phone service, i.e. buy it just as a sophisticated point-and-shoot camera? Then get the one with the best camera, and the cheapest phone you can find to make calls ...

Lol good point. I did used to carry a S110 and my phone and sometimes thrbCanon too and found I was never use the S110 so sold it. My phone lives in my pocket from the moment I wake until I go to bed so having a camera on it is useful.

A little off topic I guess, but is there anyone on this site that actually uses there phone for challenges? If so how did you do?

I've entered challenges with cellphone camera pics. My results were mediocre, but I'm just a mediocre photographer.

However, there are many photographers on this site that have ribboned or placed in the top five or top ten.
If you go to the "equipment" tab, then "camera" link, look at the various camera phones and you will see plenty of camera phones entries that have won/done well.

Eta: Looking at my page, two out of my five highest scoring pics were taken with an iPhone (scored > 6.xxxx).

Thanks. One more question about the S7. I read it is fairly fragile and cracks and scrapes easily - any truth in this report?

Thanks Leo, I checked out the equipment tab. Wow! A lot more phones being used than I would have thought, and the results are very good. Thanks again

I have an iPhone 7P. Love it....I haven't noticed loss of detail. If anything else I'd say it's over the top. Bokeh is amazing!!! I don't know of another phone that does that and the RAW...

BUT at this point in the game I'd probably wait for the next edition to come out...it's Apples 10 Year Anniversary, and I've read that they will be unleashing even more improvements ... might be worth the wait IF you can crutch by.

I had a Sony Z1 Compact that produced great images, think the latest is the Z5?

I had one too. Neat little phone. I then upgraded to a Z3.

I even got a ribbon with it.

The Z5 was flawed by overheating. They had one premium version with a 4k screen which proved to be just a gimmick. They abandoned the Z line after that. Now there is an X series with XZ as the flagship. Whilst I enjoyed the Sony phones Samsung proved a better phone. S7 has a very good phone call sound, a good loud speaker, good signal etc.

Sorry for delay in replying - hectic weekend.

Thanks Tiberius - that is good to know about the phone and its fragility. I did look at a neighbours S6 and it is a sexy looking phone so if the S7 is just as good I am sure I would be very pleased.

Oh Janine, that is interesting to hear that about the iPhone 7+. I certainly can't wait for the iPhone 8+ as I don't expect that will be here for at least another 8 months - I will be lucky if my phone works still in 8 days time. Good to know the iPhone 7+ is not as bad as I had read.

And thanks to everyone else. I have enough info now to make an informed choice over the next few days - work has been so busy I haven't had a chance to sit down and think clearly about it:)

It should be easy enough to tell as soon as one shows up on the front page ... ;-)

Just to put one more in the bucket, if you are looking for a cheaper phone Nexus 5X or 6P has a decent camera as well.

My instagram feed - Link here is mostly using Nexus 5X. I have been pleasantly surprised at what this phone can produce.

For night shots using phone camera I have realized using HDR mode does wonders in reducing noise and retaining colors. e.g. taken at dusk

Lol, I wish. If 2016 is anything to go by then you may have to dog a little deeper than the front page to find out:)

I currently own a Huawei Mate 2 which is old and outdated by the standards of the new phones on the market. I love the phone, but the camera has been my one complaint since day one. That said, My wife has a huawei GX8 that has a pretty impressive camera.
