he's already changing his stance. The wall? oh that was figurative we weren't going to really build a wall. this guy is a damn snake oil salesman and half the country bought his sales pitch.

I find it incredibly difficult to comprehend how people did buy his sales pitch, it's not as if the guy hides the fact that he's a narcissist who would do anything to get to the top, the whole world advertised his lies and exaggerations on a daily basis, he even made them his campaign. In a few years the same ignorent lot who voted for him will ignorantly be asking why their situations haven't improved and wondering why they have been lied to.

It doesn't even have much to DO with Trump-the-man. Something like 35% of the electorate and over 50% of Republicans, according to most estimates, are right-wing Christians and they are pissed off at how (in their eyes) the Democrats have trampled on THEIR rights by legalizing such things as abortion, same-sex marriage, equal rights for gays, you get the picture. This election has been about the Supreme Court; had Hillary won, a liberal Supreme Court could have been locked in for decades. But in the current Court, all of the liberals are significantly older than their conservative colleagues, and it is likely that now the Republicans will be able to stack a court for the next generation that will do everything in its power to roll back social changes.

A particularly scary aspect of this is that Supreme Court decisions on, among other things, CIVIL RIGHTS are, in the eyes of Constitutional conservatives, unfounded in law. The Constitution doesn't explicitly give the Federal government the right to legislate such things, so arguably they should be handled on a state-by-state basis. The Court has historically gotten around this by invoking the Interstate Commerce clause (the Federal government has the power to regulate interstate commerce) and saying that civil rights and business are intimately linked, and so therefore.... This is an oversimplification, but you get the idea. Strict Constitutionalism ("The Constitution is not open to interpretation; we MUST do what the Founding Fathers would have wanted us to do") would undo most of the "progressive" changes in America over, say, the last 75-100 years, and return us to a country where individual states can make their own laws about civil rights, education, immigration, and a host of other things. The chaos could be staggering.

Could this actually happen? Theoretically, yes. WILL it happen? Who knows? It's scary... But make no mistake; in the halls of power, this election was all about the shape of the Supreme Court for the next generation or so.

I disagree to the extent that I think the strict constitutionalists want us to do what the founding fathers literally said (the exact words as written), and not how they might be re-interpreted in light of any technological and social changes. That's why at least one SC Justice has opined that the Second Amendment does give the absolute right to bear a musket or flintlock rifle, but not to an AK-47 ... though I keep wondering how they (NRA afficionados) keep overlooking the first three words of the Amendment ...

Yah, you have a point. My wording was a bit sloppy.

no matter what the voters think, the SC would be very reluctant to reverse a decision especially abortion and gay marriage. What this will do is slow down or halt significantly further progress on individual social rights.

The SC was one of my primary reasons for voting for Hillary. The republican's are hell bent on getting a conservative court. I still cant believe they are allowing us to go with only 8 judges and not honoring Obama's appointee.

Edit to remove my bias. It's doubtful it will be appreciated here.

Yeah, at first I was worried about taking on so much additional responsibility ... the "normal" acronym for the Court is SCOTUS ...

The only thing I think we're gonna loose is all those people moving to Canada. I think Canada is most beautiful, it's just too cold for this Southern girl. I'm like the marathon runner I don't give up easily. I'm mostly French and German so I've naturally got a bit of stubbornness running through my veins. Throw in a bit of Irish and the Vikings and there you have . I'm staying! 👍

Canada, I've found out, has strict immigration laws. So... the folks who are fleeing USA to get away from the USA who might have more immigration laws in the future... may not be able to flee to Canada.
