It's funny how sometimes doing what you love, within the confines of others' expectations & demands, can take the fun out of it.

I restored British roadsters for a number of years and kind of burned out on it despite loving what I did. Ten years on, I'm back at it and loving it again. Finding my own place to buy where I have a gallery on the first floor and living quarters above that I pay for with my job takes the aggravation out of my photography business. The best of both worlds for me.

I've been blessed.....truly....

First world problems!!! LOL!!!

When I was 3 years old, my parents had my hearing tested because it seemed I wasn't listening, I didn't do as I was told. My hearing was fine, but there was no reason or cure for my paying no attention to what others told me to do. People have said, meaning it kindly, that I'm so good with photography (meaning I can operate a camera predictably) I should do it professionally. I occasionally do photography for others, & take money for doing it, because the client needs to pay so that they feel OK about me taking pictures. I do not want to use photography to make a living, because I'm not good at doing what other people tell me to do, it would create misery in my life to try. I don't mind paying my fees here to support the site, but that doesn't mean I have to try to get my money's worth out of it somehow. I'm in it for fun, for what I might learn from the work or the personality of the people here, for the diversity of talent here.

Over the years, I've gotten better at looking like I'm paying attention, looking like I'm going to do as I'm told & grateful for the leadership. But I still faithfully follow only my own drummer. I would ask the dissatisfied people here--why were you here? After your original needs were met & you got all you could out of this site, can you find another way to be a part of DPC, a way to take control of your experience here that might make you feel OK about paying the money? Because I would miss each one of you. I don't want you to go & leave me with another class of newbies all wanting to get blue ribbons & learn the usual. Please.

When I was a kid, they called it hard-headed, being a dreamer, short attention span.....it never occurred to anyone that I just really wasn't interested in what they wanted from me. Now they dope kids up and talk about various "syndromes" to deal with the creative, wandering mind.

Yah....."Oh! You're SO amazing! You should do this profesionally!"

But did they buy that matted, framed print that you have $213.67 wrapped up in outside costs for printing, matting & framing??? Do they have any idea what happens to your life when you sign on to do portraits/sports photography/weddings? The time commitments? Do they have any idea the costs involved in doing shows? The attrition rate from loss and damage?

Yep......I had actually given up all commercial ventures in photography two years before I found this lovely gallery with quarters above.

i so feel like I've gotten way more than my money's worth out of what I've paid since 2006 and for renewing for the rest of my life. I've learned more here than I could in any college course, seminar, club classes, and mostly because of the diversity in the available resources of this community. It's world-wide, and so much broader than any one centralized place with only one perspective.

True that!!! The operative phrase being "looking like".

My favorite Dennis the Menace cartoon caption: "Sorry Mom, I didn't hear you the first three times you called."

I let my membership run out earlier this year and went about 8 months. I was pleased that a few people noticed my absence and messaged me on FB. Just renewed recently. Not sure my level of participation will be what is was in the past, however. For those of use that only are in it as a pastime, I think we all go through cycles.
