I personally don't have anyone to get any feedback from on my pictures (except here, of course). I do ask my 14-year-old a lot, but her opinion is a bit inexperienced, naturally (but very accurate many times). My husband will occasionally take a look (if I insist), but really doesn't have much of an "eye" for it, and his tastes really don't coincide with mine as far as this goes. Other than that, no one. It would be nice to have someone to bounce things off of, especially when trying to decide if and what to submit to a challenge. I know it has to ultimately be your choice and what you feel good about, but outside takes really help, too. So, do you have anyone, and if so, use those opinions and feedback for submitting? Thanks -- didn't mean to write such a long post!

I ask my secretary or the parenting teacher in my building...they both have very experienced eyes, and aren't afraid to tell it like it is (even if it's bad!). I sometimes ask my husband, but he's one of those that always says, no matter what, "Yeah, that's nice (I have him trained well)." :o)

I use as many people as possible. I email my top choices to all of my family and sometimes to work colleagues. My partner calls himself my "manager" and helps me decide on everything. I know that I'd have entered the wrong photo on a few occasions (and in fact the one time that I didn't ask anyone for help I came in the bottom 1% with that photo :P). I find that most people I ask really like to see what I'm doing and give me an opinion.

I ask my husband and my sons - after I cut the selection down to a reasonable number. My sons usually like a different one than my husband. Whichever one I pick after that is usually the wrong one and they have no problems telling me so - especially when the scores are low. My sons tend to pick images that they tell me appeal to "younger" people (???? - when did I get excluded from that category?). Guess that means my husband likes images that appeal to a different category.. It's fun either way.

I often ask my 15-year-old daughter what she thinks. She's good at telling me if she really likes something, but doesn't have the heart to tell me "Dad, it sucks!" At least not ver often, LOL. My wife isn't that interested in the finer points of photography, but I can get a good read from her reaction as to whether the photo has impact.
I do wish I had someone else that would be brutally honest on both the artistic and technical aspects. Might keep me from submitting clinkers. Naaah. I'd just rationalize why I needed to submit it anyway.

In situations when I can't make a decision, I ask everyone I can, girlfriend, family, friends, and photographers on this and other sites with who I have a closer relationship then I try to make an average from al theyr choices.

I've just started emailing some of my top picks around to about 10 friends and family, who look at them when they have time. Originally, I decided to do this when I realized that there were differences in monitors, and I wanted some gauge on best average appearance. That has migrated to shipping them the challenge details and asking for comments.

I find it pretty helpful to see the varied reactions, and try and integrate all the feedback. In general, a group of ten people can not agree on whether it is raining or not, and this is no different. The three times that I have done this, there has not been uniform consensus.

However, the integrated opinion IS very helpful. I had what I thought was a decent shot for Teams Without Players, and more than half of the people said "This doesn't say teams to me", so, I decided not to enter, and will just have fun voting.

When I asked people about my Fire & Ice shot every single person picked the one that I didn't like. Considering that I asked 10 people and they all chose that I submitted it and it was my highest ever score :)

Now don't you wonder how that shot that you liked would have done?

They all agreed because it never rains in Australia, as it is a wonderful place, but I digress.

Mandy: Nusbaum's question is a good one, why not post your out takes?

Haha, it's raining in Melbourne today. It's freezing here (12 degrees in our system, don't know what that is to you guys).

Ooh, now you've made me wonder. I'm not a member so I don't have a portfolio. I'll have a go at linking the thumbnails from my site. Better do it later on though. I'm at work right now and I shouldn't even be reading this, let alone posting. I'm a bit hopeless on Wednesdays until the scores come out :P

I always feel guilty taking up forum "time" asking for critiques . . . but there is one picture I took this weekend tht keeps making me look at it. It isn't awesome or "pretty", but there is something I like and am curious to know if anyone sees anything in it at all. I'll resize it later and try. Thanks to all!!

Mandy:

I hate being a conformist, but your advisory committee picked the right one in my mind. Congrats on the high score.

O.K., I asked my usual 3 people plus my daughter who is visiting. Got 4 different answers.... Went with my husband's choice, so we will see...
