the real challenge is not to take points off for off-putting titles. and of course what off-puts me may not off-put you.
but I have nothing against enjoying a really good title. |

There are sites on how to title a photograph: //www.kpraslowicz.com/2011/02/09/8-ways-to-title-a-photograph/
Suggestion: Use the word Mystic. it's a grabber. Mystic Sky, Mystic Bird, Mystic Mountain, Mystic Bus Stop, Mystic Sunset, etc, etc. It gets them every time. ;-) |

Like what was for years my highest-scoring image? :-)

Naw, that one's cool. It's when a landscape oriented photo gets long winded that I sigh. |

But... if we have to have titles, may we PLEASE never have another animal asking us... "What are YOU looking at?" |
I do agree that a good photo is indeed worth a thousand words, but summing up the essence of the photo in a title does no harm at all. And yes I fully agree, no more bird/animal shots titled 'What are YOU looking at?' Been done to death, no longer funny. |
'What are YOU looking at?'
Still funny and not a bird or an animal...!!! |

If I feel a title is unsuitable for any reason, it will only sway my vote marginally. Only a point or two at the very most. Titles are important. They show the photographers personal connection, reflective thought on subject matter and aesthetic, as well as an attempt to extend the artistic or craft 'reach'. It doesn't always work. A title defines the photographers capability to perceive who their audience is or is not. How would it be if the Mona Lisa was named Bessie or Michelangelo was Rodney? |

My favorite titles are story titles. I can still see a photo of one of those glass phone booths, with the glass shattered, because it was titled She Hung Up. That made a whole story for me, & I got to participate in the photo by thinking of the story. |
