took this yesterday afternoon of a public art installation in NYC. anyone care to guess what this number means? the middle number is in constant motion and the numbers to either side of it change at slower intervals.

Wow, that is pretty cool. I really can't think of anything off of the top of my head as to what it could represent. I would be curious to know as well.

That's how they are messing with your brains, subliminal messages.
That particular message is "Vote George W Bush!" :D |

Is this it?

From that web page linked above: "On the eastern wall, a sprint of illuminated numbers, moving in alternate directions, concurrently add and subtract time each day. In the blur of the digits in the center, the unintelligibility of time achieves a visceral presence."

i am totally guessing, but i thought someone mentioned that something similar to this for which this might be is actually a "live" representation in the increase of the national debt. i think, but i might be wrong. |

Doubt it's the US national debt representation (which sits at around seven trillion dollars). The image seems to represent a number of something in the range of 134 trillion, but the way Daisy said the numbers are working seems to indicate it isn't simply counting higher and higher.

Absolutely right, i was talking out of my arse and
laurielblack was absolutely correct. i found a bit extra on google:
"How to read the clock ΓΆ€“ the Metronome -- on the art wall at 1 Union
Square South? The 15 numbers of the digital clock display time going
and coming relative to midnight. Read time going left to right and
time coming in the opposite direction. So, if the clock reads
070437000235616 it means that it is 7:43 A.M. (7 hours and 43 minutes
since midnight) and that there are 16 hours, 56 minutes and 23 seconds
remaining until midnight. The three numbers in between are a blur of
moving numbers."

Wouldn't the time "going" in that example be 07:04:37 (7:04 and 37 seconds)? |

hopefully that question wasn't directed at me - i only copied and pasted it from google answers, and what with irish stout and tiredness now plaguing me, frame of mind is not as it should be to consider the numbers involved... it all seems a bit arty farty anyway, whereas a wristwatch probably accomplishes the same task in a simpler manner... |

So its just an artistic representation then. I think that is pretty neat actually. I wish there was something like that in my city. I really like thiungs like this that make you stop and think every time you look at it.

Yeah..."what the F?" and "how much of my money is funding that?"
It is interesting, but boring after you know. Just another clock
