what this means or entails, with reference to the recent killings in Paris as well as to the sufferings of refugees anywhere. how to picture this metaphorically. do we contain? do we protect?

Yes, we retreat into our shells, or we don't let the bad guys out.
Or both?
This is another atrocity that is impossible to fathom.

it's hard to think what to do when dealing with the unimaginable and reeling from an overwhelming sense of sadness.

A freind of my partners brother was killed in the attacks. Dogma creates idiots.

As a European and as an Italian, (Italy is probably the next scheduled country for the terrorists) I feel a huge pain. My niece lives in France and I should go there next week. Hard to think what's best now, but sure a great responsability for this political situation in the Middle East is of the Western countries (of course, USA as well). No way out at the moment, terror will spread, that's quite sure.
