and now I've had a hard drive totally fail on me. (sigh) This one is going straight to the shop to see if I can get any data off it...

I had a friend of mine loose or so he thought his hard drive. He took it into the shop and they removed the disk from the hard drive and put it into another hard drive like the one he had. The info was still good on the drive, he just couldn't access it. Maybe they can save your work that way.
Good luck

my daughter's (my old) computer just yesterday had the black screen of death (the one where you turn on the computer and the screen stays black except for the little cursor blinking on the top left of the monitor).
This happened before to this computer - several years ago. It required a new processor and motherboard. It was covered at the time. I'm not about to put money into it now. :(

She just had a birthday on Tuesday and I was going to get her a new computer.. decided to wait until Christmas and got her something else (less expensive). Oh well. She may have to wait anyway.

That sucks.

Recently, my PC would load Win2K about half way, then show the black screen with the little cursor in the corner. Luckily, it would boot into safe mode, so I was able to back up the un archived files before re-formatting.

So far, so good.

Good luck

partition the drive so if windows fails you can probably still access the other partitions - save your important stuff to one of the non windows partitions. get broadband, and a good webhost, and back up data to your server.

google 'fdisk' for info on how to do partition drives.

I mate told me he wrapped up his dead HDD and put it in the freezer for an hour. It spun up one last time enough for him to recover his stuff onto another PC.

He could be full of it but it makes an interesting post :)

BTW DON'T try to spin it up at all this will limit the chances of recovering anything. Especially don't use fdisk. Take it to a pro and pray.

Putting it in the freezer can work, but not for the faint of heart.

The best thing to do it connect the drive up to another Windows 2000 or XP machine as a slave drive. Start up the computer and you will hopefully see it as another drive in 'My Computer'

I've done this loads of times with peoples machines, only had it fail once...

A great program for partitioning a hard drive on the fly is Partition Magic, no loss of data or reformatting required.

I just went through my computer and backed up every photo...whew! I had NO IDEA that I had that many pictures on it (2616). It took 4 CDs. I really didn't know I had taken that many pictures since Christmas. Now after I empty the recycling bin, my system might move a little faster! :o)

I see a few people have mentioned partitioning, this can work fine and I do that plus I have two separate hard drives that I store on both, plus I still burn a cd as I get enough.
But the partitioning would not work if in fact his hard drive is broken as it could be a machanical thing, and not windows crashing, this means all might be lost, even partitions, as they are still on that same hard drive.
