I am so glad to have seen that image, wonderful. Interesting story to go along with it, and I can see where someone could become a bit obsessed. |

Wonderful read, I can see how it would become obsessive to be able to recreate the image |

I share the same obsession when I see a photo I love. If possible, I try to track down the exact location.
Wonderful story |

Thank you for sharing. It was a very interesting read. I can see how his sleuthing was thrown out by the removal of the tram tracks but it seems a little surprising that none of the locals mentioned that possibility. |

‘‘The photograph isn’t what was photogÂÂraphed, it’s something else,’’ Garry Winogrand once said. |

What I found most interesting was the lens compression realization. Thanks for the find and share, Penny. |

A beautiful, inspirational, and famous photograph. I don't understand the obsession of trying to copy something already done. I did enjoy the article and the authors passion.
Thanks for the post. |

Thank you, PennyStreet, for posting that fascinating image and story.
Recreating an image?
It's like capturing a second identical cup of water from a running stream.
But, we still try. |

I can truly understand the desire to shoot something done before and from the same perspective and to WANT to understand from whence it came ... I'm not sure this photographer was necessarily so interested in creating an identical shot... after all this was many years later. Maybe I'm wrong.

I think it's about the same as being motivated to visit the site of an iconic Ansel Adams photo; it's not that one will be able to recreate the masterpiece as much as it is the sense of connection one feels with the photographer for having been there and seen that and, in a small way, thereby having inhabited his mind at the moment of creation. |

I agree with you assessment. It's about finding the source and not capturing the identical image. Like standing in the fairway on 18th hole at Merion CC where Ben Hogan hit his famous 1 iron shot. Nobody carries a 1 iron these days.... |

There ya go, great analogy. I'm a golfer too, and I've had the good fortune to LIVE in Carmel and be invited to play Cypress Point, site of the "greatest match ever played" :-) THat was special. |
