if photography is their career i'd imagine they were insured, if not...

I'm actually rather surprised this doesn't happen more often...

Definitely need to have insurance.

Sadly, this appears to be the continuation of a trend .... there have been several similar robberies in SF of journalists and news camera crews while they were out on assignment, usually in broad daylight.

Yeah, very scary. A friend of mine said they were up at the top of one of the hills that has a good vantage point of the golden gate in the distance. They had their cameras set up with big L zooms and when his friend moved away from camera, like 2 feet to the side of it to talk to my friend, a guy grabbed it and jumped into a waiting car and sped off. Very dangerous now.

edit to add.
He said this vantage point is a very common area for photogs to shoot the golden gate at night. They're were multiple other photogs there but it happened so quickly, no one had any real time to react.

There have been so many car break-ins in San Francisco lately that I have begun to disguise my equipment.

In our town, we have a policy of bringing our own bags to the supermarket. So these days I put my camera gear in the cloth bags that usually hold my groceries. There's little demand for celery stalks and canned beans.

I only have one lens out at a time when using the Canon, and when possible just use a little 'consumer' model Lumix that looks like a P&S. Of course it doesn't hurt to look a bit like a grandma...

Oh, yes, and stay in neighborhoods with lots of people around. Altho that doesn't do much good when the thieves are quick.

Maybe they'll have to start making cameras with RFID interlocks keyed to a ring the owner wears (like the safety feature recommended for handguns) or maybe a kill-switch like some phones ... :-(
Or take along a personal bodyguard ... ;-)

Sounds like SF is going downhill fast.

Interesting how the tech jobs squeezing the middle and low/working class out of the city will force all the low income people who stick around to violent, crime-ridden areas where the impressionable youth adapt to their new environment and feel like the only way to survive is to steal from the "rich" in the rest of the city.

But that's just me piecing together things I've read about, I've never been to the area. I used to think it'd be great to visit, now I'm not really keen on going anywhere in California anymore.

Don't write off the whole state Jon! True Northern California is very welcoming to visitors and photographers! Come see the redwoods and rustic beaches, you can skip the big cities!

Very impressive redwoods ... and grapes, and grapes, and ... I'm a native of the area -- it's beautiful country, especially if you have time to get off Interstate-5.

In defense of San Francisco, it is not unique in this regard. Every city (and community) has its quota of grab and run robbers, from Paris and London, to New York and New Orleans. Where there are many tourists there will be predators.

I think most of us who are photographers make a practice of being aware of our surroundings and probably don't stray from our equipment.

"Grab and run" story with a somewhat happier ending ...

if only hey had been carry guns, they could have protected their property.

Ah, yes, Mike, but just think. After the property had been defended, and the miscreants been blasted away,
think of all the paperwork involved! think of all the time filling out forms that the defender could have used instead to take
beautiful pictures. Just by being aware and careful. Oh, yes, and being insured.
:)

Only an idiot would do that. You'd most likely face murder charges. But hey, I've never thought of you as someone who has demonstrated that they would be responsible with firearms. ;-)

I'm almost positive Mike's being sarcastic. I certainly hope he is...

I would have shot them straight on with my 35mm.
