Is it just me, or does it seem like recently, most of the challenges are getting forum threads talking about how "terrible" all the entries are? It also seems that a lot of the same people are "whining" about the low scores they are getting. hmmm... I'm not trying to bash anybody or stir up any hornet's nests, but c'mon people. What's with all the negative vibes man? Look for the good and cheer up.

I personally like the difficult challenges. They are definately possible to do well. It's challenging not just for the actual photograph, but also the Idea behind it. It's better than fluff challenges that don't require creativity.

I second this!! I absolutely love the originality I'm seeing here. It's amazing that many people can have the same idea (like the fire & ice thing for opposites) and express it in so many individual ways. I love looking at the free studies too. What an amazing diversity of viewpoints and talents are expressed here!!

Hear hear! I totally agree. As I mentioned in another thread recently, there are plenty of other photo contest sites that have "generic" themes like "Landscape", "Portrait", "Abstract", etc. every day. The widely-varying, unpredictable challenge topics are what make DPC "what it is".
(Luckily I set the date on my camera a month ahead for all of May in anticipation of a June "Free Study" challenge. )

Hrm, I dont necessarily agree that the 'fluff' challenges dont require creativity. The banana challenge, for example, could be considered 'fluff' as it doesnt seem to be a difficult subject, and yet it required a lot of creativity to 1) make a banana look interesting, 2) be different from everyone else. It is the straightforward challenges that require not only taking a good image, but coming up with a good, creative idea that no one else may have thought of. When you have difficult challenges you spend most of your time trying to think of a subject that wont be voted down by anal voters who seem to be obsessing about a specific word in the challenge details and eagerly rubbing their hands together to give out the stock 'doesnt meet the challenge' comment.

Maybe it's just me, but I had a harder time coming up with an idea, and then, a shot for "Banana" than I did with oh, just about ANY of the other challenges I have entered. :o) Interestingly enough, it's doing fairly well (for me, anyway). Maybe there's a correlation there... I'm still getting the cursory (and conflicting) comments relating to "Wonderful dramatic lighting" and "lighting is bad." I just try to have fun with all of the challenges, because to me, the "challenge" is the fun part. It's a quest. A personal quest to see if you are half as creative as you think you are. I know the challenge is what is helping me to get better each time (unless you count my "habit" score, which was not good). Just have fun and enjoy the ride.

Couldn't agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
People are a tad bit too touchy.
Taking pictures is fun, the competition is fun, taking part in the forums is fun.
On top of it all it is a learning experience.
Prior to finding this site, I sometimes was at a loss as far as "schooling" myself on this wonderful hobby.
I've participated in two challenges and wow...the quality of my entries is far above my past photographs in imagination and quality.
To learn is to grow. Learning (good and bad lessons, is always a good thing. |

laurie, I don't mean to put you on the spot or embarass you, but I just have to point out that I have noticed your posts, and you have got to be one of the most positive, upbeat people around here! Your comments are constructive, cheery and well intended, never derisive, debase or offensive. Fun natured and positive, positive, positive. Even when disagreeing with something, you do it in such a way that one can only smile and accept the thoughts. I think you set a great example and I am glad you are around. There are several others around that embody this spirit also and thanks to all of you 'cause...mean people suck!
oh and P.S. ...don't tell anyone, but I heard somewhere that the "Hokey-Pokey" is what it's all about. ;-) |

Thank you...I have to admit that sometimes I'm a little too perky for my own good! It drives people at work nuts, and sometimes my husband, but I figure, either laugh or cry, and laughing makes better wrinkles! :o)

"Difficult" challenges produce low scores and large numbers of shots contrived to meet the challenge but that are of amazingly poor photographic quality.
Overall the highest quality images come from more generic themes that allow the photographer greater artistic freedom or in the free study challenges which have no theme at all. Study them and you will find that in general the "easy" challenges generate more creative, high quality images than narrow focused or obscure challenges like habits or Serendipity.
