I would think that if the law gave equal marriage rights to all couples, the we would be getting fewer laws and less government control over what citizens can do. This was certainly the case when we got rid of the laws banning inter-racial marriage. When the federal government steps in to bar states from making laws which are intended to bar certain groups from being treated equally under the law, it simplifies jurisprudence and makes enforcement simpler.
Tomorrow is Loving Day celebrating the anniversary of the June 12,1967 ruling that made anti-miscegenation laws illegal in the United States

hearing the words This was certainly the case when we got rid of the laws banning inter-racial marriage. is very jarring. It seems absurd that a ban over inter-racial marriage ever existed let alone in our life time. In fact I felt quite repulsed that this was ever an issue. Our children will feel the same way in their adulthood I am sure when they hear the words " When same sex marriage was illegal" |

Well I can hardly wait for the crying when you realize what you have done, No one can tell you because you want it so badly. I can understand Hillary will fix it for you. |

OMG... we've barely recovered from the horrors of allowing interfaith and interracial marriage. How ever will we cope with yet another non-issue? |

I really am not much for crying and can guarantee you that there is no way in Hades that I will ever cry over the passage of a law that treats ALL citizens in an equitable and civil manner.
Do tell me what exactly it is that you object to.
Forget your phobias, religious perspectives and personal biases in your response... that should streamline the process significantly.
Looking forward to your response.

10 Reasons Gay Marriage is Wrong (In America)
10 Reasons Gay Marriage is Wrong (sarcastic)
1. Being gay is unnatural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things, like eyeglasses, polyester and air conditioning.
2.Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
3. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women still are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
5. Straight marriage will be less meaningful is gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.
6. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't yet full and the world needs more children.
7. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
8. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we only have one religion in America.
9. Children can never succeed without a male and female role model at home. That's why as a society we expressively forbid single parents to raise children.
10. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

An old friend and photographer has a new film out about people who don't fit stereotypical gender roles; Three to Infinity has one more screening at the SF Documentary Film Festival on Monday. |

I've known what I've done since 2008, when I got married to my husband.
It's not that much of a realization, at this point.
ETA:
Anyone else think it's morally poor to look forward to generalized suffering?
Seems kind of monstrous, honestly.

It's like there aren't countries and states that have had legal marriage for decades... or something.
It's a huge mystery what's going to happen.
Canada, you've been warned! |

Seven years is long enough for those of us who are sentient, to figure out we're never going to agree. |
How about let's not do what you suggest, because silencing debate favors the majority by default.
...unless you mean to disenfranchise people like me personally. Then let's do that. Sure, they'll never agree. I should just get over my desire for equality. Problem solved!
But hey, let's step back a minute, and think about people changing opinions.
Did anyone notice that support for equal marriage rights is up over 60%? Someone is changing their mind.

The word on the street is yet another split decision despite Roberts getting sick of them, Either 5-4 or 6-3 depending on how Roberts sees his legacy.

To think that gay marriages have been legal in Canada for 10 years and the institution of marriage still exists for other folks.
Who knew?

Game over. Gay marriage is officially legal nationwide. I can't find the exact quote, but I think I predicted this result "within 5 years" about 5 years ago. |

It's been interesting to see the reactions on Facebook. My friends range from very Christian conservative to ultra liberals. Posts are either "our country is doomed" or finally-time to celebrate. |

Well there we have it. The most senior legal minds in the country have ruled in favor of equality.
I wonder if that'll make people rethink their positions.
Nah.

"No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization̢۪s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right. The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed." |

Maybe over time, but for now people just seem to be voicing their beliefs about the decision being wrong.
(I live just outside of a city that is part of the "Bible belt". They recently voted to repeal a city ordinance that protected LGBT from discrimination. It was a narrow vote, but the churches won in the end. It was embarrassing. I am so tired of all discrimination. So many young people flee as soon as they are able.)
The Supreme Court decision is a step in the right direction, but there is still a long road ahead. |

Congratulations America, and in the years to come when this is a complete non-issue you're going to look back and think,'what the hell were we so concerned about!?!?' |
