I would think that if the law gave equal marriage rights to all couples, the we would be getting fewer laws and less government control over what citizens can do. This was certainly the case when we got rid of the laws banning inter-racial marriage. When the federal government steps in to bar states from making laws which are intended to bar certain groups from being treated equally under the law, it simplifies jurisprudence and makes enforcement simpler.
Tomorrow is Loving Day celebrating the anniversary of the June 12,1967 ruling that made anti-miscegenation laws illegal in the United States

hearing the words This was certainly the case when we got rid of the laws banning inter-racial marriage. is very jarring. It seems absurd that a ban over inter-racial marriage ever existed let alone in our life time. In fact I felt quite repulsed that this was ever an issue. Our children will feel the same way in their adulthood I am sure when they hear the words " When same sex marriage was illegal" |

OMG... we've barely recovered from the horrors of allowing interfaith and interracial marriage. How ever will we cope with yet another non-issue? |

I really am not much for crying and can guarantee you that there is no way in Hades that I will ever cry over the passage of a law that treats ALL citizens in an equitable and civil manner.
Do tell me what exactly it is that you object to.
Forget your phobias, religious perspectives and personal biases in your response... that should streamline the process significantly.

10 Reasons Gay Marriage is Wrong (sarcastic)
1. Being gay is unnatural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things, like eyeglasses, polyester and air conditioning.
2.Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
3. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women still are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
5. Straight marriage will be less meaningful is gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.
6. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't yet full and the world needs more children.
7. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
8. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we only have one religion in America.
9. Children can never succeed without a male and female role model at home. That's why as a society we expressively forbid single parents to raise children.
10. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

I've known what I've done since 2008, when I got married to my husband.
It's not that much of a realization, at this point.

Anyone else think it's morally poor to look forward to generalized suffering?

But hey, let's step back a minute, and think about people changing opinions.
Did anyone notice that support for equal marriage rights is up over 60%? Someone is changing their mind.

The word on the street is yet another split decision despite Roberts getting sick of them, Either 5-4 or 6-3 depending on how Roberts sees his legacy.

Maybe over time, but for now people just seem to be voicing their beliefs about the decision being wrong.
(I live just outside of a city that is part of the "Bible belt". They recently voted to repeal a city ordinance that protected LGBT from discrimination. It was a narrow vote, but the churches won in the end. It was embarrassing. I am so tired of all discrimination. So many young people flee as soon as they are able.)
The Supreme Court decision is a step in the right direction, but there is still a long road ahead. |
