As I said, either way, the Patriots balls were under-inflated, which is against the rules. Whether they started that way or air was let out, it doesn't change the fact. |

no but it will determine the severity of the punishment, if any. how do you willfully punish if there was no intent to break the rules?
You don't, you fix the rules so it doesn't occur again. The rules are changed all time.

Easy. If someone runs a stop sign, causes an accident and says, "Oops Officer, I didn't mean to." when the police question them, does that mean the accident isn't their fault and they don't get a ticket?

and yet if they don't cause an accident the cop may let them off with a warning.

Let's not jump ahead. The article sounds like they were supposed to log the pressure of each ball, but there may have been no such requirement (as there was little worry that people were cheating in the NFL). Back in the beginning of the year MMQB had a great expose on A Week in the Life of an NFL Referee. In it they mention the pregame ball check (months and months before anybody even cared). No mention of any logs.

Now that the NFL is officially a for-profit enterprise they can afford to hire crews of independent agents (add to the officiating crew) to handle the balls -- no reason each team should have their own. |

The NFL, networks, advertisers and all other parties have already made all the money they can off the super bowl. Other than damaging a relationship with Kraft, there's really nothing to be lost by vacating the wins. In fact they would suddenly look as if they've regained a bit of integrity.
All they're talking about locally is how many games will Tom be banned. That doesn't even make sense to me. It's a team sport, the team shares the victory or defeat, regardless of how many people were involved, the team took the field in the AFC championship game after pulling a bait-and-switch deception operation on the refs. It's inexcusable.
Next season is next season. The NFL would be foolish to damage its future product. But these victories should most definitely be vacated. |

Did anyone actually read the results of the investigation. Unless I am very much mistaken they said "probably", something that is not exactly a damning condemnation and is only applied in civil litigation cases.
If indeed they did use "deflated balls, then their opposition really ought to have pressed the league to have them use only that type of ball, particularly when one considers how the Patriots scored in the second half of that game using properly inflated balls.
There is no real tangible proof here and all we are witnessing is a "Rush to judgement".
