Easiest way to do this is dont renew membership and update button would go away along with many other things ;) |
true, but i'm talking about no one being able to see their score at all until after voting is over. it think it might increase excitement. |
I disagree. Seeing the vote averages as they happen has allowed me to "walk away" from a shot that obviously didn't connect with voters, and focus on the next challenge. |

Maybe on "Open challenges" the persons "rank" can be listed- top ten, top twenty, etc.- with the
goal being that scores don't preoccupy or fill the mind of (someone) continually, intrusively, and to a troubling extent. |
Interesting idea. Keep the scores behind the scenes and the photos simply appear in their voting order. Will never happen but I like it. |

So, you'd go to the horse races, choose your entry, then go do something else until they post the winners...? |

bad analogy, its more like picking a horse and only being able to see the horse you picked run. plus but it takes a week for it to run the track. |

Sure, like comment. Better than thread upon thread of complaining about scores. I have scores turned off so I'm the wrong person to weigh in on it, but when you think about the DPL and other competitions, the only thing that matters is where you place in relation to the other entries in that challenge. Your percentage placement, or order. Your actual score is meaningless after rollover (other than to determine what appears in your profile).
People are hooked on watching scores, so that's a big part of DPC. I'm not saying it will or should happen, but I personally like the idea. |

I think any supposed temptation to vote-down others would only be fueled by seeing one's place compared to the other images. |

as opposed to reacting to the doldrums of viewing your score drop vote by vote? :P |

A member here started a site that did that -- you didn't see the scores until the voting was over. Never kept my interest, because you couldn't really play along. You'd just have to stop back every week or two. Dull |

can't we all just put our differences aside and agree that I deserve better scores than I get? |

It would be funny if some sick individual gave out bunch of 1's just to watch folks whine in the forums and then go back and give 10's later, and then some more ones... sending the observing participants on a roller coaster for a week. finally voting legitimately at the end. ;)

strictly out of curiosity, is this against the TOS? since votes dont actually count until rollover. |

From the Voting Rules
You May Not: vote in a manner that suggests an intent to disrupt the voting system.
We Will: disqualify challenge entries from, suspend or ban anyone who abuses the voting system in any way. |

Since the only reason for doing this would be to influence how others may vote (based on their reaction to their own score, even though it shouldn't matter) such an activity could be construed as a violation of the voting rules (not the TOS). I would recommend against it (other than during the first week of April at least), unless you really like people thinking of you as an insensitive boor.

I think your subject line is 100% correct. If anything, it needs stronger language to properly convey just how corrupt.
Your message body, however, seemed more like a rationalization of how you fantasize that other people vote and it didn't strike me as having any basis in the reality of this place. I too have my own fantasies about what makes people here such terrible voters, but without evidence, they are just my fantasties.
In the end, DPC is what it is. I seldom see the need to enter a challenge because of how terrible the voting here is. But the people who make it terrible seem to like it that way, and who am I to try and change them. In a perfect world, this site would be named Photoshop Weenie Challenge, and real photographers would have their own website called Digital Photography Challenge. Sadly, the real world is a cold and dark place where everything wants to bite you.

Everyones scores should go down the last day for contest that I have entered. On the last day I go thru and vote and do not give any photo a score higher then what mine currently is at and try to get my average score given to be 1/2 of what my photo is currently at. If I have time I will go thru and make adjustments before rollover. |

Umm, no. After 8 years participating on this site, I have learned to interpret the voting and to also gauge other factors that can affect one's average score. There may be a handful of folks who engage in tactical voting, but it's the exception.
You are competing against and being voted on by others with (on average) a similar level of skill to your own. However, they also bring their personal tastes and preferences to the table. Thus, you can pull a mid to high 5 by having a good photo. But above that point, it becomes more about broad appeal.
There needs to be something to make it stand out from the others to get above that magic 6 mark with the DPC masses, while not giving anyone reason to lowball it. It's a tough balance to strike. It's also why certain genres (such as dramatic landscapes) seem to nail the high scores better. For another example, I like abstract photography, but I enter them into challenges knowing I will likely do no better than a mid 5, and that is if the wind is at my back.
