am trying go beyond just cropping pics using ps....converted to greyscale, then used the auto level and contrast adjustments this time.....would like to do some educational pics sometime in the near future (work at an spca) and think they'd be more effective in b&w - sue

not bad BW's although i wouldn't recommend you use the greyscale mode as the way to convert them.

do a google search for digidaan there is an action you can download - and drag into the actions pallette in PS. duplicate the original layer, and then F4 + shift runs the action. you will have better control over the BW tones, and IMO better results.

these appear a bit flat which is typical of the greyscale conversion.

BTW - i have gotten every dog and cat i have owned from the SPCA ;}
except the dog i own now i saved directly from an abusive family.

also, as it seems a bit grainy, if you have the capability of desaturating the reds and magentas (possibly) first, and maybe the blues too, then using the digidaan action, or channel mixer to turn to b&w, it will clean it right up.

the digidaan action seems to help with noise quite abit in some instances -w/o other noise reduction efforts.

you have to adjust the hue of the lower hue/saturation layer.
and not just leave it at the default setting of the action.

great pics, and they pawswipe pic is especially cute. B&W is definitely the way to go, I agree with KarenB, to use channel mixer to convert. You also might want to try and make sure they eyes are always clearly shown.

thanks for the help :D

I used auto as it was the 1st time I'd tried taking pics in that room, it was an interesting lighting situation as the cages are stainless steel so couldn't use the flash. Just checked the exif data ISO 320, F2.0, 1/30......think I might go back and try some diff settings tomorrow.

That's what I was going to add...little kitty's eyes would really tug at the heartstrings, peering out between the bars of the cage or kennel. Good pics; following the advice already given will really help make an impact. :o)
