Coarse grain on the outer surface of a die casting. Nope, never seen it in my 30+ years as a metallurgist. It is hard to tell definitively from a single picture but the "steps" on the fracture surface indicates a fatigue fracture to me (multiple fracture initiation sites). I also don't see any bending around the fracture, which would indicate a stress overload condition that would be associated with a dropped camera.

I agree that it looks like it was fatigue driven. No sign of deformation prior to break whatsoever. It could also be due to a (very) brittle material, and some die-cast materials can be brittle, but I suspect fatigue has had at least a contributory role.

Bear,
I agree with you, anything attached to the same point even if it hugs the camera needs more mounting points to really spread the load, I have plans to modify the l-plate so it also attaches the the camera strap loop, exactly how I'm still not sure
