Nice work, looks like it should hold.

That's a very good looking repair job. I hope the camera works right when you reassemble it, and that the repair holds for you.

Nope, I'm looking at the edge of the crack itself. That is indicating to me a rather coarse-grained material. I agree that the grinding marks can represent stress concentrations, but they also normally put the surface in compression, which can mitigate that.

Coarse grain on the outer surface of a die casting. Nope, never seen it in my 30+ years as a metallurgist. It is hard to tell definitively from a single picture but the "steps" on the fracture surface indicates a fatigue fracture to me (multiple fracture initiation sites). I also don't see any bending around the fracture, which would indicate a stress overload condition that would be associated with a dropped camera.

I agree that it looks like it was fatigue driven. No sign of deformation prior to break whatsoever. It could also be due to a (very) brittle material, and some die-cast materials can be brittle, but I suspect fatigue has had at least a contributory role.

Bear,
I agree with you, anything attached to the same point even if it hugs the camera needs more mounting points to really spread the load, I have plans to modify the l-plate so it also attaches the the camera strap loop, exactly how I'm still not sure
Cheers!

Send this pic to Nikon.......surely they would want everyone to ask you what that's all about......
