This just in: The NFL has decided that they will deflate the tires on Belichick and Brady's cars as they are parked in the stadium during the Superbowl.

Maybe they should make Brady play in one of those "Pump You Up" suits popularized by Aaron Rogers ...

Belichick’s explanation invites scrutiny, analysis, testing

what was the temperature of the air that went in the balls when they were filled ?

were they stored inside - or warmer than the outside temp ?

did the air temp change significantly over the time the footballs were filled - vs when they were tested ?

did anyone test the opposing teams inflation situation.

i'm tired of hearing about inflated or deflated balls.

in the real world. deflation can be as damaging as inflation to a given economy.

done.

I don't want to deflate expectations regarding the Super Bowl. The big game should be easier to 'catch' next Sunday!

Well, at least the SuperBowl will not carry an asterisk*.

I still think Brady is the best quarterback ever. I'm hoping he goes into f*** you mode in the Superbowl like he did in the 2007 season after spygate.

This should speak to the scientific/mathematic crowd...

The New England protection against fumbles is nearly impossible

how much you want to bet it comes out the the refs don't even check the actual psi before the game.

An NFL source with direct knowledge of the situation told the Globe that a referee inspected the balls before the Patriots AFC Championship game with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday and all the balls were in compliance. That suggests that the balls were deflated sometime in the first half of the game.

The real bet is, will the NFL make a ruling before the superbowl?

My guess is NO WAY.

Moot point anyway. If the Patriots wait any longer to fly out they'll be snowed in and miss the game.

The success of the flight will depend on whether the plane's tire inflation is equal on both sides.

Maybe half the plane's tires were inflated in a sauna.

the author of the article was clearly biased and that bias made its way into his analysis, and that term is used very loosely.

Care to elaborate? I can usually pick up bias in statistics, but I'm missing it here.

There is an article on deadspin about all the problems.. I'm on my phone but ill try to grab the link.

Good article, but has its own biases as well. I won't get into it (because maybe we both don't care). Here's the takehome I will carry away with me. Instead of an odds of 1 in 16000 it's closer to 1 in 300. It's interesting to me that the data is normal for fumbles per play but the inverse of that data (plays per fumble) is not normal (although one can visualize that the data is nearly normal with 2 or 3 outliers including the Patriots which is the datapoint of interest). I wonder if a math guru can explain why that is.

Just as an example of how the article has its own biases, the author spends some time talking about fumbles per rush and fumbles per reception. Here the magnitude of the difference looks much smaller between the Patriots and other teams, but part of that reason is merely because the n is also smaller. One would expect roughly half the rushes and half the receptions compared to rushes plus receptions (yes, in this pass happy NFL that isn't really going to break down 50/50, but you get the point). It looks pertinent to point out that the difference between 3 and 4 is only 1 when the difference between 6 and 8 is 2, but, of course, the ratios are exactly the same.

Still. Thanks for the link. I found it interesting.

yes, clearly its biased by using arguments that makes the Pats look not so much as an outlier but the take away from the article is that you can make the results look the way you want them to if you use the right inputs.

it is fascinating to me the levels that people and the media will go to to prove something, they are even now question what the equipment guy was doing in the bathroom for 90 seconds. god forbid the guy actually dropped a deuce in their and spent some significant time.

I still maintain that the refs NEVER check the psi and merely only squeeze the balls to see how they feel before every game. I think its too risky to illegally manipulate a ball that the other teams and the refs touch too often.

edit, spelling errors

So, since 11 of 12 Patriot balls were underinflated, and seemingly, none of the Colts balls were, are you insinuating that the Patriot balls were never inflated to full pressure in the first place? Isn't that just as bad as letting the air out later?

i think the equipment guys fill the balls with air to how the qb likes them, Luck may like them over inflated, Brady, under. Rodgers already admitted he likes them way over inflated.

i think the equipment guys fill the Pats balls based on how Brady likes them. the refs feel the balls before the game and if they feel fine, then they are good, i'll bet human laziness in involved and nobody checks or confirms the pressure.

the balls are inflated and checked based on how they feel. I'd also bet that Brady and Belichek didn't even know the required pressure before.

I added words in bold to your quote to improve its accuracy:
