This just in: The NFL has decided that they will deflate the tires on Belichick and Brady's cars as they are parked in the stadium during the Superbowl.

what was the temperature of the air that went in the balls when they were filled ?

were they stored inside - or warmer than the outside temp ?

did the air temp change significantly over the time the footballs were filled - vs when they were tested ?

did anyone test the opposing teams inflation situation.

i'm tired of hearing about inflated or deflated balls.

in the real world. deflation can be as damaging as inflation to a given economy.

done.

I still think Brady is the best quarterback ever. I'm hoping he goes into f*** you mode in the Superbowl like he did in the 2007 season after spygate.

An NFL source with direct knowledge of the situation told the Globe that a referee inspected the balls before the Patriots AFC Championship game with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday and all the balls were in compliance. That suggests that the balls were deflated sometime in the first half of the game.

The real bet is, will the NFL make a ruling before the superbowl?

My guess is NO WAY.

the author of the article was clearly biased and that bias made its way into his analysis, and that term is used very loosely.

Good article, but has its own biases as well. I won't get into it (because maybe we both don't care). Here's the takehome I will carry away with me. Instead of an odds of 1 in 16000 it's closer to 1 in 300. It's interesting to me that the data is normal for fumbles per play but the inverse of that data (plays per fumble) is not normal (although one can visualize that the data is nearly normal with 2 or 3 outliers including the Patriots which is the datapoint of interest). I wonder if a math guru can explain why that is.

Just as an example of how the article has its own biases, the author spends some time talking about fumbles per rush and fumbles per reception. Here the magnitude of the difference looks much smaller between the Patriots and other teams, but part of that reason is merely because the n is also smaller. One would expect roughly half the rushes and half the receptions compared to rushes plus receptions (yes, in this pass happy NFL that isn't really going to break down 50/50, but you get the point). It looks pertinent to point out that the difference between 3 and 4 is only 1 when the difference between 6 and 8 is 2, but, of course, the ratios are exactly the same.

yes, clearly its biased by using arguments that makes the Pats look not so much as an outlier but the take away from the article is that you can make the results look the way you want them to if you use the right inputs.

it is fascinating to me the levels that people and the media will go to to prove something, they are even now question what the equipment guy was doing in the bathroom for 90 seconds. god forbid the guy actually dropped a deuce in their and spent some significant time.

I still maintain that the refs NEVER check the psi and merely only squeeze the balls to see how they feel before every game. I think its too risky to illegally manipulate a ball that the other teams and the refs touch too often.

So, since 11 of 12 Patriot balls were underinflated, and seemingly, none of the Colts balls were, are you insinuating that the Patriot balls were never inflated to full pressure in the first place? Isn't that just as bad as letting the air out later?
