This is an outtake for the candid challenge. Had a hard time deciding which to enter. I think I made the right choice but still really like this one. I had to bump my ISO way up and still couldn't get my shutterspeed where I wanted it. Overall very noisy and soft image. I salvaged it the best I could. Here is the original for comparison:

Who am I to dare comment on these images? I do look with much interest though.
Just throwing my two cents of a question to all of you :
- in the above images don't you prefer the mysterious softness of the blueish hues? And since it's a lovely girl, don't you opt for less of added make up for her eye lashes?
Of course, I do not look at these portraits as a master photographer and I do prefer the original with, let's say, a touch of work on the face color wise. It probably depends on the use of these portraits. I imagine that for a magazine one would opt for the light portrait but for an "artistic" shot ("artistic" for lack of a better word) the original is truly beautiful.
All the tips and comments are really interesting. |
I usually have always preferred warm tones, but have been experimenting with cooler tones. I don't think either is bad maybe just whatever mood you are trying to create. Maybe it would be fun to process this with the cool tones just to see. By make-up do you mean the added sharpness and contrast I applied to the lashes? Sorry I'm just trying to make sure we are talking about the same thing. I see now that it probably is a bit overboard. I am always trying to get nice sharp eyes, or eyelashes despite the rest of the photograph being soft. Sometimes when processing it is hard to step back and see that you have gone to far, so I appreciate the critique. |

Thanks for the answer Jen.
No, I did not mean good versus bad either.
Yes, I minded the eyelashes. If you sharpened or added "mascara" to me it's too much. I agree though that for a fashion magazine standard there is a norm and it was debated to death on other forums. But this being a side challenge made me ask the double standard question.
Yes, it would be interesting processing the same original in a different mindset.
What you did in the girl with the fish is amazing. Even there I wish for one bit of a less-than-perfect area, for less evenness of light and shadow; but this is my own taste having nothing to do with your skills.
Apart from fashion magazine photos there is no harm in seeing imperfections provided they're not mistakes!
Anyway, I follow you all with interest. |

So here is another shot of my friend Casey. I used Nik Analog Efx to give it an old worn photo look. I was hoping to give it a "shot in the 70's" type of feel.

I love all different points of view and appreciate your comments. I love all comments especially differing points of view if they are not done mean spirited (which I did not take your comment to be at all). If we only ever hear praise on our images, how are we to learn and grow? Your comment made me realize that I did take the sharpness in her eyelashes too far. Next time I am going to step it back a bit. So your comment was very helpful. |

For whatever it is worth, in terms of tone of Jenn's recent set of images I prefer the warmer toned one. I think this one is truer to the actual skin tones. I also pretty comfortable with the contrast and sharpening in the processed image. I prefer sharp. Full disclosure: I have a fixation with sharp. Hello. My name is Mark, and I am a sharpenoholic. Too often I get a little too deep into processing and go too far with sharpening (often as the turnover clock is ticking), and I need to pull back and get some perspective. Often I don't realize it until after voting starts. Sometimes not until I get a comment from Mariuca. She is quite aware of my problem, and she is trying to help. I sincerely appreciate it, but we still have work to do. That said, I like Jenn's handling of this image.
Obviously, a lot depends upon personal preference. I know I need to move closer to Mariuca on the Softer <==> Crisper spectrum, but we may never quite agree on the optimal spot. I do agree with her that the original is lovely image, and, with such a nice image, there are lots of interesting processing decisions that could be explored. |

Ha ha Mark! You can strike it just right as you did recently!
You are a sharpenoholic. and I am a crispenoholic crispoholic! If I don't have one crisp element in my photographs I go to my ophtalmologist! If there is even sharpness in my photographs I go to my ophthalmologist! (He is a personal friend fortunately and interested in photography) If it's all blur I go to sleep. I slept a lot over Christmas.

So, on Thursday night, while setting up for a shot I entered in Resolutions, I grabbed my daughter to sit in just to test the lights/settings. Here is a quick shot:
Soft box high on my right side. Television high on my left. |

I like working with models, you can achieve a lot. Five of the same model, same shoot - all quite different I think:
All shot using ambient light.

My brother and his son are starting a business together, did some shots for them for the website. Pretty boring stuff but hey, at least it's fresh work.

Just a quick try tonight. I wanted to sort of feature the braid without it taking away from the face.

Very nice images Paul. It is amazing that they were all shot on the same day. It is hard for me to switch gears that fast. |

This is lovely set of shots, and an impressive and creative array of different poses/settings for a single shoot. I would have been happy to get even one of these out of a shoot. How do you find your models? |

Taken last month, but I just got round to processing, so it can be a January portrait can't it? |

This is one of my friend's kids, he was reading his favorite book to the ducks. As he was reading he was doing the noises as well as being very dramatic with the arm expressions as he read. I feel a little actor coming on, I was able to capture him during his voice expressions |
